Get the JTR books. Read. Come back with any questions.
They are about the best reference for this project. They lean towards using the GM TPI/TBI engines and touch on LT1. What you are wanting to do is do-able.
Best bet is to get an engine and transmission combination from a bone yard from the came car. That way the cam, torque converter and ECM are matched. Unless you are racing, avoid the TH350. Its rock solid but has no overdrive and thus poor gas milage. The 700R4 is a good tranny. The 4l60 and 4l60e are also a 700r4 just renamed.
You will have to get a 4x4 output shaft for the transmission. Depending on what tranny you have and what tranny you get, you may be able to reuse the adapter plate that connects the tranny to the t-case.

I agree with everything, but that the TH350 is rock solid. It is a medium duty trans and is the cheapest. I have an 84 4X4 with a TH350 and the original transfer case. I also have the original driveshafts. The swap is not impossible, but definitely harder than the 2wd. The exhaust is a pain in the butt, unless you get the conversion headers from Adv. Ad. or Hooker. The oilpan just clears the crossmember, maybe a bit of grinding is involved. If you want to be able to service the starter, then you need a mini starter, since the stock one is so huge, it will not come out with the motor in. I just blew out my TCI TH350, and I am converting the truck to 2wd for racing. No cash for the full-on AWD truck. If you want I sell you the tranny with the adapters and front pumpkin and driveshafts and all. The TH350 has a blown roller clutch, but it is a Truckmaster from TCI with 7000 miles. I paid $1200 for just the tranny last october, I will take $200 plus shipping for everything. I will be putting the tranny/transfer case with driveshafts on Ebay later on this week.

no warranty from TCI on that tranny? Thats quite lame. ::notes to self, dont buy a tranny from TCI::
My reasonsing for what I said about the TH350 is this: We have a conversion van (full size Read: heavy) with a 305 and TH350 in it. It has nearly 400,000 miles on is and is having no problems. That and a bunch of friends with jeeps use the TH350 for everything and dont have problems.

If you drop that big of motor in an s-10 I would suggest going to a solid front axle, ditch the IFS. If you actually take the truck offroad you will demolish the front end with all that extra torque and horsepower. When I put a V-6 in my trooper(yes I know, boo japanese crap) I thrashed cv joints left and right. I finally stuffed a toyota 8 bolt underneath the front and I have had no problems since. I know it sucks but it will be well worth your money with the added options you have in lockers and gears and such. It is really not that that difficultand you will not have to learn how big a pain in the ass putting new cv joints in is.

Okay,, don\'t do it unless you need to. Do a 2wd instead. Now that I said that. I have a 406SB in my 4x4. 700R and transfer case from a full size Blazer elimates bellhousing and shaft problems. Radiator from Griffin. No AC so put the radiator sunk in where ac condensor was added a engine driven 17 inch fan. Took out the ac box in the fan blower cut the box and shortened the box and glued it back together . Put a piece of sheet metal underneath to seal up. This to allow header and engine clearance. Back right side of the engine is the tough area. No probs with HEI clearance. Adjustable shocks on the front to assist in compensating for the additional weight. Dual exhaust made at muffler shop. Loud, too loud. Carburated engine, dent the frame rail and use a mechanical fuel pump, easier on the carb float valves, even with a fuel predssure regulator the Edelbrock 600 (yuck) would load up. Just disconnect the wire to the electric fuel pump. Works fine without it. Big transmission cooler n front of the radiator. Mounts/headers /remote oil filter from Advance ( they are the eay bits.
See! probably 1/3 the effort for a 2wd and you will never blow a transfer case. Mine does get 2nd rubber. But the other day I came on to a HWY in rain and punched it to move into traffic in 3rd the tires broke loose and was squirming around the road. Scary!

Check out www.s10-4x4.org
lots of pics and info there.
My truck got a 305 TH350 NP205 with a dana 44 in the front and a 12 bolt in the rear 5.13 gears (locked in the front and an Eaton in the rear). I\'m running 36\" TSL super swampers right now.
Hay,I\'m Chris.I just dumped a 400 sm blk in my g-friend\'s 91 s10 4x4,The best advice is dont get discuraged, one step at a time, and as long as you keep movin on your project, you will bring life to,and father,or mother the BEEST.Try to stay away from
(advanced adapters)moter mounts, thay sit the motor to hight, and to far forward, use the 2 piece not the 3 piece mount.3 core 4.3 rad is good.As for your remote oil filter,
PERMACOOL is your best bet,and try to use exaust manifolds, headers are a f--kin head ake.
Good luck, and keep posting,I\'l help any way I can.

You can check my Pics. I do have some good ones with notes. My was done before all the detailed books, magizines and web sites. I agree w/ some info from 406v8. I think 4x\'s are better though. You can go Anywhere you want. and have lots of power doing it. I think they are a little more fragile than the 2wd though. t-case, xtra drive shafts, diffs. more to break and it does cost more to build and fix.
I still wouldn\'t do without a 4x4!

Also looking to do one. Using a awd transfer case (4474?)
Will a normal 700r4 work and just replace the tail from a 4.3 for the Tcase hookup?
The blaze in question does\'nt have the front half shafts. Was going to grab a astro awd transfer case and half shafts. Am I on the right track?
