View Full Version : Emissions help
This goes out to all who live in an emission state. I have just completed buildin a new 350 crate motor and i was going to drop it in my 99 xtreme but desided to just buy an older s10. My question is what about all the emissions? If I run headers and cats are they going to freak out about not having all the internal crap (ie. smog canaster etc.). if any one can shed some light i=on this i would appreciate it. And i live in Chicago, IL

The law usually says that the engine needs to be of the same year or newer and all emissions equipements installed. Say for your \'99 you would have to get an LS1 from a \'99 or newer and get all of the pollution stuff and run exactly the same exhaust to be technically legal.

in NY the engine has to be available for the model year vehicle and the emissions (so the 350 is not legal in ny) has to meet or exceed the emissions for that year, but, anything before a 96 is a visual inspection

in ri same year or newer must have same or newer emissions and can only have type of exhuast it came with single must stay single if dual was available for that vehicle from the factory then its ok.this applies to pre 96 vehicles after that i dont know
In Pa.it has to pass a visual first. Some people(not me)have cut open the top of their cats(not me) and taken everything out. Some have (not me)put in a vacuum canister and just ran the hoses into the frame to nothing. It passes visual.(so Im told)I think the emissions thing is a load of crap. The Kid's GTA passes with flying colors every time without cats.We have mileage consessions, though.Under 5,000 mi.is exempt.
There's a couple of cities around me that don't have smog reqts, we usually register
them out of town at our buddies parents house about 10 miles away.
Per the paperwork, they prolly own like 14 diff vehicles.
Is it your whole state, or is there anything like this available for you?
