View Full Version : what tranny recommended??
IM installing a 406 sbc (originally came with 4 speed) into my 88 s-10. The 406 will replace the 2.5 and a 350 turbo will replace the 5 speed... Now what cars should i look for at the junkyards to rob he tranny out of?
What about speedo?
And how do i know if its the 9 inch tail shaft (cause they say the 9 inch tailshaft is best to use).
Now the flyhweel wont be needed when going to auto right?
WHat takes it place?
i don\'t believe there is much difference in the 350 tubo, from one to the other. Best thing to do is take it to a shop and have them get your speedo right. Uh, you\'re gonna need a flywheel for that thing, or you\'ll never get that mother started. Take a tape measure, or just ask the men at the yards.

most 350\'s are the same. the ones usally in full size truck..late 70\'s early 80\'s have a longer tail shaft, not sure how long though. Try to get a 153 tooth flywheel, these work with the smaller starter out of a 80\'s camaro or monte and the starter will fit fine. I used a 168 tooth flywheel and the big heavy duty starter and had to do alot of pounding on the frame.
Hello - from what ive heard there is a difference in some th350 trannys. If they come from an older v6, then they will have less clutches in them. Try to find one out of a 70\'s monte, truck, or something large like that. No, you wont use a flywheel anymore. You will use an automatic tranny flexplate. Measure the tailshaft from the tail of the transmission (at the output shaft), to the mating surface where the tail bolts on. Good luck with your swap

The C-10 full size chevy\'s, at least the long bed trucks, have a Th350 with the 9\" tailshaft. Although, I am told that some of these are a lock-up tranny. Buddy that rebuilds tranny\'s told said that the lock-up won\'t hold nearly as much power as a standard TH350. That was my problem with the one in my 81 c-10.

I call them all flywheels, but the proper name is flexplate. Opps, i\'m still an old school guy. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif
