View Full Version : Body Lift? TransferCase Problems

I\'m trying to straighten out my S10 Blazer to operate the way it\'s supposed to. I\'ve got an \'85 4x4 with a 350, 700R4 trans, with a 3\" body lift. I did\'nt build this truck, I bought it this way. The vacuum has not been hooked up to engage the front diff., it has just been left in 4HI, and the cable clamped with visegrips on the actuator to engage the front diff. I\'ve never used 4LO, and it won\'t shift to 2HI. Common sense tells me I need to trim the floor to shift into 2HI.(it\'s never been done)

I\'ve hooked up all the vacuum lines on the transfer case to make it work the way it should, but I\'ve found that if I try to shift the trans case to 4LO or 4HI from neutral, it won\'t engage, it just grinds.(Remember, I\'ve never had to shift it before). Could I possibly have the vacuum lines hooked up in the wrong position, or is the shifter out of adjustment on the trans case? Also, can I extended the shift lever to clear the plastic console when I shift into 2HI?

Thanks,

Jim C.

I would imagine that you could legthen the lever to make it work in 2 hi. mine only got about 2\" but my father did the lift before i was old enough to learn about it. im pretty sure that he didnt have to cut anyof the floor or anything but i could be wrong

the only problem i had with the shifter with the body lift is the boot around it on the shifter was hitting the plastic i just kick the shifter in to 2hi http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif i had to before the body lift so it doesn\'t bother me kicking it in to 2hi

3\" Body lift. I didn\'t have any trouble getting it into 2hi I had the trouble with it staying in 4lo once shifted. You can view my shifter in my pics.

It sounds like you may have more aof a problem than just vac* lines. The vac* switch is operated thru the shifter- you have to shift it into gear before it will change the direction of the vac*.

Try shuting truck off, shift into either 2hi or 4lo. Then restart the truck. If the auto trany is spining a little then it will grind when shifting. If ir doesn\'t help than they may be something sticking in the t-case.

When I put my body lift on, I put spacers under the top shifter mount bolt on the Tcase and just used the top hole on the side of the tcase and pluged the other one... Ill try and get some photo\'s if youd like to see....

Did you make sure that you were in nuetral (column shifter)? That\'s the first step cuz it will grind going into low from 2 or 4hi, whereas 2 to 4hi and vice versa can be done on the fly.

the 2nd thing is you need to make it one smoothe constant and strong motion. i used to think i had to shut my truck off to go into 4 low, but then realized that if you pull back firmly and consistantly then it will engage just fine with no grinding.

I made sure the column shift was in neutral. The transfer case also goes into gear just fine with the engine shut off. I\'m hoping at this point the grinding is as simple as being low on fluid. Have\'nt had a chance to check yet.

Drivin2fast:I\'m interested in seeing pics if you can get them. My delema with travel, is the knob hitting the console in 2HI.

SpaceCadet: Currently I got the console out, I never thought about 4LO not clearing. Question, Who made your headers? Those are the same as mine, and I had to re-weld and rework mine too. They sure give a lot of clearance underneath. Wish I could find a new set of them.

Mentioning my console being out reminds me, does anyone have a wiring diagram of the console shift lights? I have the \"ribbon\" wiring going into the one side of the light panel, but the other side which I assume is power, is missing.

Thanks, Jim C.
