View Full Version : Jeep Dana 44
Has anyone tried using a Dana 44 out of a 70\'s or 80\'s Jeep? I can get one from a postal jeep that has only about 40k miles on it, and it has posi-traction, or Trac-Lok, or whatever they call it. It\'s about 2 in shorter than the stocker, and the spring perches would have to be moved, but that\'s no big deal. It\'s an 8 1/2 in unit. Different offset wheels could take care of the difference in length. I know the driveshaft end would have to be changed to accept the Dana pinion also.

It would be a pretty strong unit to use. That shorter axle width could come in handy with fitting fat tires on there... as long as the frame doesn\'t get in the way (which it might). I suppose it depends on the price, im having the same dilema with a ford 9 right now

Not that this really applies to the current topic, but I know GM used a Dana 60 on the 3.8 liter turbo Trans Ams and a buddy of mine has one behind a stout 454 in a z28 and it\'s held up fine for years running high 11s on motor.

Its roughly about the same strength as a 8.5. The dana 44 has a 8.5\" ring gear and 30 spline axles, just like a 8.5\" 10 bolt. They are good strong rears, but are a little harder to work on.
