I just busted my 1988 4X4 S10 rearend with 373 gear. It completely stripped off all the teeth of the pinion. It is completely bald. I guess I am out for the F*rd 9\". I have found a galaxie 500, but I cannot find info on how wide the rearend was on those. Any ideas? Any suggestions on what vehicles to look for? I have searched the site and sofar a fairlane, an 81 van and a 72 mustang are all suspect. Any others?

ford didn\'t make a 9 inch for any car narrow enough to fit and bolt in a s10 so you are going to have to have one cut to fit no matter what!

my 4X4 rearend is ~53 inches backing plate to backing plate and 5 inches more to the axle, so about 58 inches maybe closer to 59. I know that there are F*rd rearends that are the correct witdth. The spring perches might be different, maybe the suspension is also, but right width. I would like to know if anyone has any info on Galaxies, since that is what I found in a junkyard for $100. I measured 54\" from backing plate to backing plate, but I cannot confirm it anywhere on the net. Thanks.

I know wickeds10 has his from the 81 van with 31 spline axles and he had his narrowed, but some other posts said that the explorer and 72 or 73 mustang would fit.

mine is from a 80 van and it has 40 spline axels and its tubbed u cant go from backing plate to plate u have to measure from the flange where ur wheel bolts to to the other side to have it correct.if ur gonna do it urself its real easy to do... to narrow the rear and weld everything on it.

no, on a nine inch you have to measure from the pinion yoke to the brake flange on the right side to get the correct measurement because on the center section on a nine inch the pinion is on the right as opposed to the center set on the gm pinion yoke.if you think I\'m wrong I\'ll have to tell my friend who ownes BABBIT BEARING and MACHINE SHOP which is a rear end shop here in my home town to close up shop after 22 years of business because he told me where to measure before I CUT MINE .

I have heard the same thing about the offset. Thanks for the warning. I will see what I can come up with, since right now I can only get a 31 spline out of a truck or that galaxie. I know people say, that it does not fit in a 2wd S10 or a car, but I want to know for sure.

you would be suprised how much a stock 31 spline can take but by the time you have it cut you can buy aftermarket. I have a friend who ran stock 31 splines for 3 years before they broke but that was with no nos.
