steering column question

does anyone know offhand what type of metal the steering columns in our trucks are made out of. like the outer shell part thats inside the truck. i ask b/c i want a polished one and seems the only way im gonna get one is to do it myself and i have off for the next 5 days.

I would vote pot metal, or cast aluminum. The gear shift part of the column, right?

The outer part is cast aluminum, or something very similar to it. But when you look at the inside, it is very uneven colored. You may want to try just a small section on the bottom first. I have some spare steering column parts, maybe I\'ll try it and see.

Cool idea sir but I think you\'re in for a big surprise. Alot of work. LOL I too would hve to say pot metal and not easily polished.

i know its gonna be alot of work. im gonna start with say a 220 grain paper and work my way to progressively finer grades up to 2000. if yous are sayin its pot metal then im guessin it wont polish? im gonna try it on a small section. my guinness tap stick finally broke for good yesterday and i had a spare stick in the garage that i threw on there. it was all beat up and nasty lookin so i cut the threads off and took all the paint off and polished it like that. you can see yourself in it now. looks badass with the big chrome framed boot i got in there too.

Well, there are deffinetly metal ones out there, I had a spare bowl in the garage, and it does look like pot metal. But, there are plastic pieces on them(near the tilt lever), even if you have the metal ones, so you could never polish it all. Maybe if you got a non-tilt column from the salvage yard.

nah dude, i love havin tilt. the non tilt ones are never angled right as far as im concerned. im gonna look into gettin it chrome dipped.
