Just got the motor running Sunday, cam is broken in, now it\'s time to get it to idle, can anybody help me out here. Im using a Holley 650 Double pumper on top of a holley street dominator intake, it starts up fine but wont idle and I will not lie I am not a carb person, konw how to hook linkage up and vacuum lines and that\'s about it. A friend of mine works for Barry Grant(BG is located a few mins from me) and he said he would take it in with him but the turn around was gonna be a little bit because the carb would have to go thru R&D to be reworked and since it was a holley and not a BG they would take the time to get rid of any Holley markings on it..lol.. but anyways anybody provide some tips/pointers on how to set the carb so maybe I can get it to idle?. thanks

first off get your timing right. turn in your idle screws to the stop then turn them out 2 turns. then it should idle somewhat. now turn each idle screw in till the motor stumbles abit then back them out slightly till it smooths out. that is about as close as i could get you.

How big is your cam? A larger cam will mess up the idle also. You can open up the secondaries 1/2 turn from stop, or drill small holes in the primary throttle blades near the idle transfer slots. This shouldn\'t be a problem with a small to medium cam though.

cam is a Mellings .520 solid lift. worked with it today, had to time it by ear, once that was done got the idle down, she\'s still idling a little high but that\'s ok I\'ll finish tweaking it the next few days. MoFo revs quick! thanks for the help!

Buy a Vacuum Gauge , it will be a great help when dialing in your carb.
Once you have the basic mixture setting , check your timing and set the idle mixture screws till the vacuum is the highest, and buy a couple of extra Power Valves after you figure out how much vacuum you pull at idle, Holleys love to kill power valves.
