Just found out that the HEI wont fit, too close to the firewall. Well, actually it does technically fit, but the wire boots make it impossible to adjust timing. Having to buy an aftermarket ignition now and was wondering what some of you hardcore guys are running. Was looking at the Mallory Hyfire VI box with a Unilite distributor. That or the MSD Digital 6, but right now Im leaning toward the Mallory. What do you think?

I\'m using all MSD. Pro-Billet distributor, 6AL Box,Blaster 2 coil, MSD wires. All systems work, but I chose MSD because it was on sale and works well together.

I run a mallory unilite distributor, with blaster coil, and 6AL box. It works awesome and it comes with all directions to install. Took very little time. Im definitely happy with the change over stock.

I use the TD plate kit. But the issue goes back to the pickup vs. blazer issue I guess. Dont have enough room to move the HEI, actually I couldnt even put the cap on all the way, much less adjust the timing.

if you don\'t own a big enough hammer, borrow one.

I would recomend the 6al and Probillet dist. with a blaster II coil and 8.5mm Super Conductor wires. Thats what i use and i love the fact that you have alot more room to adjust the timing with the MSD dist. Even if you were to use a big ass hammer to make room for the HEI you will probably want the features that the MSD kit offers. Like your choice of rev limiter, muiltiple spark discharge, and ease of installation.

The plates I got were out of Summit or Jegs, cant remeber. The manufacturer site is www.tdperformance.com and it allowed for no forward or rearward adjustment. I was not very impressed with these mounts, and now I dont have enough clearance for an HEI. Oh well, im better off without it I guess.

I used the same plate kit and like it, and i used the stock HEI system for a while on a stock 350. It fit okay i guess. Your right, the plug boots made it hard to adjust the timing, but all i did was take a grinder and \"open\" the back up a little to make it easier to do. Now i have a MSD set up and would never go back to HEI.

Yeah no kidding, I dont want an HEI but funding is getting slim these days. Just need something temporary until I can get either an MSD or Mallory. I decided for the time being to go with a points distributor (for small size) for a month or so just to get the motor broke in, then I will switch, ought to be able to free up some green by then.

i agree with mike.... if youve got a big enoguh hammer and shoehorn anything will fit.... for example i just finished putting a 350 into a chevette!!!! i drove it three blocks stepped on it and watched the spider gears break a window across the street

holy crap. that sucks. well the only reason i dont want to hammer the hell out of it is that if i hammer any more my windshield wipers would probably not work. the motor and stuff is behind that.

for an alternative cheeper route, what about an old points distributor with a petronix ignitor2 kit in it, or a smaller style hei w the external coil

one of my girlfriends friend has a 66chevelle and had a unilite mallory something less blah blah crap whatever... fresh motor, NEVER ran!! just finished buildingit...that thing ... not only are there TOO MANY WIRES to hook up, and not enough harnesses.. but the stupid ass thing wouldnt even fire. I took my MSD billet distributor out and borrowed a friends 6al, to plugs and a few ring terminals later the motor fired and ran like it has been running for YEARS. Plus mallory distributor caps are so small and thin.. they just seem so WEAK, i can drop my MSD cap on the ground ALL THE LIVE LONG DAY and now worry about it cracking (not that i\'ve tried!) http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif
