Hey all,
I\'m sort of new to the board. It seems really good from what i can see so far.
Anyways, my question is, i have an 84 s10 with a 4 speed manual. I have been told that the rear end in it is 7.5\" 10 bolt with 2.73 gears???
Does this seem right?
Secondly, I was wondering if in order to change the rear end over to a posi style, would all i have to do is replace the limited-slip differential, or would i need to change anything else, or am i completely wrong altogether. I\'m not very familiar with rear ends.
Any advise or help would be appreciated.
Thanks

If you have posi it will be a govnr lock style posi. The could be 2.73\'s but I haven\'t seen any under 3.08 in s-10\'s. A good and cheap replacment posi for a 450hp or under sbc is a Zexel from SLP engineering. You will have to get the larger 28 spline axles from the 7 5/8 rear end from the 89 and up s-10.

so you don\'t think mine has 2.73\'s?
I\'ll have to do some digging then, because I was told that they were. It\'s the stock rearend, it hasn\'t been changed or anything.
Zexel is the way to go? What is Auburn? Are they any good?
Also, do Zexel and Auburn not work with 26 spline? Or only with 28 spline?
Sorry, about all the questions, i\'m just trying to learn a bit of stuff as i go about this thing.
Thanks

You can buy an Aubrn or Eaton for the 26 spline, but the Zexel\'s that are being sold by SLP are only 28 spline. The 28 spline is slightly stronger, and if you can find good axles cheap, it is worth it. All you would need to change to posi is a new carrier assembly, and then bearings, fluid, new ring gear bolts and a cover gasket.
Look in the glove box for you sticker with all the codes on it then look in the rear end forum and match the code with the ratio.

so if i was to change out the stock unit and go with an auburn or eaton 26 spline type, would i have to change anything else out beside the posi unit itself?

i also meant to ask if anyone has 2.73 gears in their s-10 that came stock that way?

The SLP posi is a 3 series carrier, so you\'d probaly have to get new gears also. Probaly be a good idea anyways. I put an Auburn in my bird and i really like it. Expensive though Around $320 brand new.

If you look on ebay, you\'ll probubly find an Auburn or Eaton posi unit. You can get them with or with out gears. They also have gears sets listed too. When you replace the carrirer, you have to put in a new crush collar kit. Now matter what your deciesion, you can also choose a different ratio if you want. My favorite ratio is 3.55-1 snapy yet reasonable crusing rpms.

You dont need a new crush sleeve unless you are removing the pinion. If all you are doing is changing the diff case all you will need is new bearings, bolts, gasket, fluid and additive.

You can also replace the crush sleeve with a solid spacer, i had to have mine machined down to fit perfect. They stop the pinion from walking up the ring gear under hard acceleration. Its not required but good insurance to help with rearend strength.

It doesn\'t stop it from walking up the ring gear, it actually helps keep the pinion from deflecting under acceleration. It mostly helps saves bearings, it doesn\'t realy add strength. They are a good ides, but they should actually be shimmed to within a couple of thousandths.

hey, i know for a fact that s10s came with 2.73 gears. i\'m not saying that all the s10s came with them, but my \'92 4.3 5-speed had a single track with those gears from the factory.

i guess i\'m just going to have to take a drive out to the farm this weekend and look at the thing. that sounds about the only way i\'ll know for sure what i\'ve got in there.
I think i might aim for the auburn style posi unit. What bearings will i need to replace?

If you are going to change the gears, just replace them all, they are cheaper as a kit. Also, check the bearing surface on your axle while you are in there. If you are just changing the carrier assembly, you only need those 2 bearings.
