What do you guys recommend when setting up the clearance between the oil pickup and the bottom of the oil pan? Let\'s just say I had to do a little \"fabricating\" on the oil pan to make the big block fit. The factory clearance was about 1/2\" and I think that might be a little high.

i use a 3/8 nut (1/2 inch Hex) set it on the pickup tube then set the pan. the nut will make the tube move toward the 1/2 inch clearance. remove the pan and nut and tack weld the tube to the pump an be done.

hmm, seems like i read to set the pan on the block w/o gaskets in place. If the pickup doesn\'t touch it, your fine. Don\'t quote me on that, just something i think i heard.

I\'ve built 3 4x4 pans. I\'ve put the pan on, pushed it to met the block. Added 1/4 inch then welded the pickup tube in place. ( i used a slip joint between the upper and lower part of the pick up ) Then welded to get a perfect seal. After the gaskets installed gives you about 3/8 clearance.
