I have a 1983 Trans am with a small block(Maybe a 305). Any way that transmission is a 3 speed with overdrive. Could this be a 700R4? How could I tell if it was a 700R4?

its a 700R, didn\'t come out with 4L60 till the 1990\'s. TV is basicly a kick down cable.

TV = throttle valve AKA kickdown cable, but not really on a 700R4. The TV cable controls all functions of a 700R4.

So it is for sure a 700R4? If it is will it bolt up to a chevy 305 or will I have to get a BOP adapter plate? Thanks for all the help!

my guess is its a 700R4, and if its a 83 like you say then its already a chevy motor.

A 700r4 basically has a rectangular pan. And a 200-4r has a pan that Id say comes to a point. at the rear. See page 48of NOV.2002 Car Craft, pic of GM trans.

the only firebird ever made with a 200R4 was the 89 turbo TA, and that was a complete GN drivetrain. I\'m betting it\'s a 700R, a bad year for them, but still a 700R.

i would excersize caution in using this tranny in a performance application.
The early 700r4 had problems with them, your better of getting something from 86 or newer!
but thats just my opinion

I would just like to say that the TV cable isnt just a kickdown, it controls all the shit in the transmission, hook it up wrong and you WILL F-up your trans, I learned this twice the hard way, what a pain in the ass...

The kickdown in my s10 is vaccuum operated(I think it is hooked to a bladder) so do i just leave it hanging and hook up the cable from the tranny to the carb. What else is there to hook up other than the TV cable? I haven\'t looked at it yet it will probably make sense to me when I pull it.

I went out and looked at the carb and the only thing hooked up to it is the throttle cable. The kickdown cable is just setting beside it. My brother drove it a year or two w/o the kickdown cable attached. I didn\'t see a TV cable unless it looks just like a kickdown.

NEVER MIND I FIGURED IT OUT
I went out and looked harded and found the TV cable and i think it will all work as long as the tranny hooks to the 305. Thanks for all the help!

The TV cable can be adjusted in length at the carb end....there is a black plastic housing on it and you push on it\'s \"spring-loaded plunger thingie\" to lengthen or shorten the cable. Moderate adjustments make drastic shift changes. One does not want it adjusted so that it comes out of 1st at a very low RPM......that will tear up the tranny. But , then, you wanna be able to have a passing gear when you floor it. Good luck
