I just recently got my 1994 s10 running but extreemly unhappy with the 700R4 I\'m using..I mean it has that deep first gear and then it bogs into second and goes forever before it shifts to third...Anyway I am having A guy here in my town build me a racing 400 turbo that he is willing to trade me straight accross for the 700r4...My question is will the yolk change and are the length dimensions to the output shaft different than the 700r4..I\'m hoping it will mount close to the same as the 700r4 so I do not have to modify it much....

Bad news. The 400 is way different. It is longer and the mounting holes are in a different place. The yoke is for a bigger, 32 spline output shaft, like a muncie or a rock crusher. This means you might have to get a driveshaft made. If you have a 2 piece, that means you only need the short-piece sortened.
The good news.
Summit sells a $50 crossmember to put a TH400 in the S10. It is good and it is powder coated, it looks nice.
You can get a cheap yoke from Ebay for the TH400 and any drivehsaft place will have the U-joint that will mate the S10 shaft to the 400 yoke. I paid $250 for everything I listed here, when I swapped a TH400 into mine. I also built mine and researched it for months, so I can tell you Anything about the 400, so let me tell you something.....
Ask the guy if he built the TH400, if not then ask him to tell you the numbers off the side of the trans. there is a metal tag on the passenger side. Ask him for the letter-number combo. This is the stamped-in bit in the lower row of numbers. The numbers will be the year. If you want I can tell you what the trans came out of if you give me this set. I need both numbers and letters. If the year of manufacturing is later than 71, then ask him if the direct-clutch drum has been changed to the sprag-style instead of the roller clutch. This is necessayr for racing. Also ask if all the plastic has been replaced in the trans. The front servo accumulator piston and the intermediate clutch spirng reatiners are plastic in the later model 400, so they deteriorate in the hot trans fluid.
If the number is lower than 71, then ask if the case-support has been modified. THose are the ONLY weaknesses inside the TH400. You must also realize that an OD transmission is worth ~2X as much as a 3 speed, even a TH400, without midifications. With the modifications I listed the TH400 is worth about the same as the 700. If you need any more info on the 400, just let me know. I love to help.
