Sure you can. But, if your gonna narrow something, why not do one thats totally gonna be bullet proof.

Like a big 12 bolt or 9\". If you\'ve got some power, theres still a chance of breaking an 8.5\"

Well this rear is pretty much bullet proof it isnt a stock rear. I am taking it out of drag car. I was told I couldnt narrow it because the axles might be tapered..... http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_confused.gif

You would have to have custom axles made for it then. Which wouldnt be a bad idea any way. You could upgrade it to 30 spline while you are in it, then it would be pretty close to a 12 bolt. They are 8.875 versus 8.5, and they are 30 spline.

The only difference between the 12 bolt and 8.5\" is that little margin, and the 30 splines? I thought that they were a 33 spline.

Im starting to feel real confident about my 30 spline 8.5\" soon to go in.

BTW, thanks again Mike.

You can upgrade a 12 bolt to 33 spline, which I am in the middle of doing now, but they are 30 stock. That extra 3/8\" does make a difference, but in light vehicles it\'s marginal.
