Right now im running a peg legged 3.08 gear in my s10 and it sucks..Not bad for doing 40mph in first but..I\'m thinking about going with either a 3.42 or a 3.73, but kind of undecided on which route to go. Im running a 700r4 trans..Its going to be a daily driver..but in town mostly with an occasional trip to the beach [100 miles or so]. Im leaning towards the 3.73 and installing a zexel posi...any suggestions would be VERY helpful.

Spit it down the middle. 3.55\'s. I have them in 12bolt posi in the trans am. Good mileage and good power! The 3.73 would be less forgiving on the rpms on the highway. Since you have overdrive, it be like runnnig a 3.55 w/3spd auto.Around same rpm at cruising speed.
My blazer has 3.73 it is a real power house. It can pull like horse. If it had a higher gear (lower numericly) I think it would spin the tires off when I tried to pull.
Thats my opionion. Its all up to you in how you want to use it to which will be better for you. Space.

Thanks for the quick reply...Yeah I was kinda worried about cruising rpm [right now I can do 70mph @ 1900 rpm]...but swapping to a v8, I guess I can give up on the gas mileage thing. I\'ll probably end up doing the 3.73 gear for the simple fact I can go to the junkyard and yank a rearend out and bolt it right on up...

If you have 3.73\'s with 25.5\" tall tires 265/50/15\'s you will be turning 2250 with the 700R4.

Besides with the 3.73\'s, auto and a wider set of tires, you should be able to launch pretty good at stop lights!

There aren\'t 3.55\'s available for the 7.5. I\'d go with the 3.73\'s. You\'ve got overdrive, put it to good use.

I\'ve got a 91 S10 Blazer 2wd with the 700r4 originally a 3:08. I just put in a 3:73 rear end and wow. What a world of difference. It was like turning on a switch, it woke my truck right up. The rear is nothing special just a 7.5 10 bolt (GAK code), came from a late 89 s10 4 banger 5 speed. Only issue I have with it is my speedo is way out of whack now, cruising along with traffic maybe 65ish i show to be going 85+. You definately want the 3:73\'s though well worth it.

I have seen drastic gear changes make over a 1 second difference in the quarter, and 3.08-3.73 make as much as 7/10ths. If you can do it yourself it is the best bang-for-your-buck out there.
