Hi,
Im new here and dont know a hell of a lot. Im planning on putting a 350 v8 in my 84 s10 4x4. My question is its a 4 speed manual and I would like to keep a manuel for the 350? Is this possible? All I hear you can use is the 700r4 from a 4.3. But its an automatic. This is my 1st truck and Im only 16.
Would the 700r4 smokem pretty good with the 350? would it accelerate faster with the 700r4 than with a manuel tranny?
Sorry for the long post Im planning on doing this project coming summer so Ill be asking lots of questions.
Later Ryan H.

Ok here goes.
Your factory 4 speed manual can be adapted to the 350, BUT it will take some machining as well as purchasing some bell housing goodies from companies such as Advanced Adapters. The thing is, even if you do get them to mate up, you will probably destroy that transmission fairly quickly since it\'s not rated for that kind of power. My suggestion here is ditch the 4 speed you have because it won\'t be worth the time or money if it breaks which it will eventually.
So, your other options. Yes, the 700R4 will work fine with the swap although depending on the power you put down, this could also break but you\'ll have more luck with this than you would with your stock manual. Atlhough I know a lot of people who use this tranny and it has worked flawlessly for them so it is definately an option to keep in mind.
Another option in the auto department is to go with a TH350 which is a pretty durable auto which can be easily mated to your 350. Difference would be greaing and the lack of overdrive.
Now, on top installing an auto, since you originally had a stick... the most convienent way to deal with the auto shifter is install a slap shifter up from the floor rather than dealing with all that column shift crap.
OR A FOURTH option would be to install another manual transmission that could handle the power and be adapter easier. This is infact my method that I am using myself because I am such a fan of stick shifts. Here\'s the deal. There are several transmissions out there that may be used and mated easily, BUT a big problem is shifter placement and length which leads to fabrication of the driveshaft and crap like that. The easiest way I have found/heard so far would be to get a 5 speed New Venture 3500 (NV3500) out of a 91-94ish (is that right?) S10 that came with a 4.3. Apparently this transmission will hook up to the engine with no mods and the shifter comes out in the same place, AND it\'s the same length as the stock one. So, if you can find one of those it would probably be in your best wishes. I have not yet found one to fit my wallet so I have not tried installing one yet so it is possible that some of my info about it above if wrong, but that information is what I have heard from others.
Ok, so theres a few options I threw at you, a lot of it depends ont he amount of work/fabrication and money you want to spend but that\'s what the whole swap is about in the first place. I tried to give you as accurate of info as I could but I may be wrong on a few points so anyone feel free to correct me if I am wrong.
Also, be sure to purchase This (http://parts.s10v8.com/product_info.php?cPath=21&products_id=28&osCsid=11f77219927467f43901ec81b0d233c7) manual from the parts section (http://parts.s10v8.com/). It has alot of good info.
