I first want to thank you for some awesome posts, I am learning a lot about timing from reading some of these posts.

Now I have a question, I set my engine to 12deg I have pause and some sputtering when I first step on the gas, once it gets past that it takes off great. do I need to back off on the timing or is something else wrong. i thought about the accelerator pump but it is new and working great. Thanks for your responces.

your secondaries on your q jet may be opening up too quickly. you can adjust the spring tension on the flapper on the passenger side of the carb towards the back. adjust in more spring tension to slow the opening rate of the secondaries.

This happens when I just bearily step on the gas, not near enough to open the secondarys. Like taking off easy from a stop light.

it still could be the spring pressure if it\'s way too soft. What about your distributor cap, rotor, wires, plugs, coil??? Are the new? old? could be any of these or a combination.

Check the vacuum advance for proper operation, and also make sure the plug wires are not arching over or crossed. Usually they bog from not enough timing, but 12 should be fine. Could be carbon build up, could be many things. Just start with the regular tune up stuff.

You set the timing at 12 deg with the vacuum plugged, right?

....... Another thing to check: you said the accel pump looked OK, but it\'s important that there isn\'t any slack in the linkage, that it\'s pumping immediately coming off idle.

Yes I disconected and plugged the vacuum before setting the timing.

I will check these things out tonight if I get a chance, Thanks all I appreciate the advice.

it sounds like your accelorator pump needs adjustment,or richen up your idle ciruit, sounds like you are slightly lean on part throttle accel.

Hey guys thanks for the help. I found out my problem. The truck had died and I found the little coil in the dist. had a wire broken well when I replaiced it I used parts from another dist. I had laying around problem was it was a 6 cyl dist. from a 4.3 and I had changed the shaft and the points contactor (whatever it is called) so it wouldn\'t run right. I got it running great now. The problem was all in my dist.

Was it the pick up coil? That is usually a problem in HEI\'s. They start going bad at high rpm\'s when the mechanical advance somes in.
