Hey,

I am new this site and s-10s..I have looked through nearly every post in the forum but I do not understand over half of it. I just bought a 97 s10 and I we\'re putting an lt1 in it this weekend. The truck as it sits now is a v6 w/ auto tranny. I would like to do a 6-speed. From what I have read this is very much possible, just a pain. When it is all said and done how much would I be looking to spend for the tranny swap, and what would be an ideal tranny to use? If you could please say what car it is from, I havnt learned all of the #s yet (which is why I didnt understand most of the threads)

Any help is greatly appreciated..thanks.

t56 from a newer trans am or camaro...it\'s a 6 speed... look to pay like a grand easy for the complete used tranny.... very expensive... personally i\'d stick with an auto and get a 700r4 with b&m trans pack and a small stall... it\'s a 4 speed auto and a realy nice tranny... you can get them out of pretty mcuh any 86-90 camaro, and any 88 and up chevy half ton... jsut as logn as it\'s 2 wheel drive... they work great

A 6 speed swap into a truck with an LT1 is going to be the easiest for a 6 speed. If your using the LT1, just get all the factory parts for it. Standard F-body flwheel, clutch, linkage, starter, etc.

You\'ll need to move the tranny crossmember back to the fathest hole, and might need to drill 1 new one. Of course you\'ll need a hole in the floor for the shifter, and shorten the driveshaft.

Personally, I\'d pick the 6 speed over your automatic anyday. It\'ll hold up to more abuse too.

Expect to pay $1-1500 for a complete 6 speed. Oh, and it has to be from a LT1 motor, the LS1 6 speeds are different.

Oh, and then, sell your auto tranny. Offset some of the cost of the swap.

why would you use a 700r4 when the trans behind that motor is a 4L60E. The trans it has in it now would run circles around the 700r4. 4L60E is the stroger electornicly controled 700r4. and if your going carb, and your taking the computer out of the system than get a 4L60 From a 1987 to 1996 4.3 s-10, or fullsize. I\'t would be alot easyer to keep it automatic but if you have to have stick. think about the all gm manual trans\' since the early 80\'s have hydrolic clutches. This is an easy fix but time extensive. you\'ll need the clutch/brake embily, the master cylinder, the hydrolic line and the slave cylinder, from a manual s10. thats easy to find but your dash has to come out and that is at least a 6 hour job with out breaking it. Then you\'ll have to drill 3 holes one about 2 inches and two about 1/2 inch just the right spot for the master cylinder pushrod and mounting bolts. then you mount the resovor on the fire wall and cut the hole in the floor board and get a stong clutch to put the power to the ground and then opps fergot to mention bye bye 7.5 in\" rear. it can be done because my 93 has a 6 speed in it, you have to beef up a lot of stuff once clutchs start dumping, and belive me you can say i\'m going to take it easy untill you get the stonger stuff, but one that thing is on the road there goes the pedel to the floor, after that your pushing your truck home. but if you have any problem or questions just ask.

Why does the dash have to come out? And it shouldn\'t take you 6 hours to take out the dash, unless you got 1 arm.

I had mine completey pulled a part to paint some of the peices about a month ago. Took me about an hour, hour and half. That was with a dewalt cordless drill, and a 6 pack.

lowrthnus10 just a side note the 700r4 and 4l60e are the same trans when it comes to strength. what makes these trans strong or weak is the way there put together ie clutch packs also what torque converter you put with it is important if your worried about how much torque the trans could handle an LT1 is a very weak motor stock and a 700r4 will hold up fine the LS1 long block would require a thm400 or beefed up manual trans because of its amazing torque curve. dont feel put down thow an LT1 has a lot of aftermarket goodies that\'ll get it pumped up real nice. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif

I had a 700R4 custom built for my s10 needs for $800. He used a 4WD case due to the stronger case put the short tail end with the speed-o- socket for a manual speed-o- and added a shift kit w/2200 stall converter. fit the tunnel like a glove...
