Blazilla (\'01 2WD) is in need of a heart transplant (4.3L to 5.7L). I have to meet emissions requirements. I was told that an engine from the same model year with emissions equipment that meets the same standards is okay.

1. The only 5.7L available from 2001 are in 1 Ton trucks.

2. I am not sure what data they use to date the powerplant. (i.e. Could I use a 99 engine and tell \'em that it is newer)

3. I also thought of playing it stoopid and keeping the V6 look up top and letting them find out it was swapped on their own and say, \" I didn\'t know, I bought it used!\"

Any help available?

I noticed this is your first post.WELCOME. I have found that this has been the best deal I have ever gotten for the money. As for emissions,it is really goin to depend on where ya live. I finally got mine inspected today, but it was because I have friends in low places.

Is that right? what about the Suburban/Yukon

1/2 tons.

arn\'t they still makin them?

If you have the Vortec 4.3 then I dont see why a Vortec 5.7 wouldnt work.

You could always buy a brand new crate motor maybe.

<--I\'m still stuck in 93 so I\'m not up on all that new fangeled stuff.lol

If all else fails many have found that leaving a $20 in the ash tray often works emission miracals

Which state or province are you trying to comply with?

I\'m pretty sure the year doesn\'t have to match. I think the requirement is is that you have to have the same emissions equip. on your the engine that was standard for the year of the truck.

I think that\'s how it works anyways....

Someone correct me if i\'m wrong.

Oh Yeah, Welcome to the board http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif

I\'m also a newbie to this forum, but I\'ve grown old getting mine smogged in California.

Here, it is a 2-step process. First you have to pass a visual inspection to get BAR referee sticker in your door. The 2nd step is to pass an emissions check.

The simple answer for us is that a replacement engine (what they call an \"engine change\") must be the same year or newer. In practice, this means it has to have all the smog equipment that the engine came with...not the truck unless it is the same year. So I claimed a 1997 5.7 (L31) and they pulled up all the smog controls the 1997 L31 came with, not what my 1991 Sonoma came with. The tricky part was that the engine actually was a 1998 that I converted to a 1997 to get around the passlock system. I had to make sure all the controls were 1997; for example, I had to convert the EVAP system backwards to 1997 (this was actually a good thing as I could still use the 1991 charcoal cannister in 1997, but not in 1998). The biggest problem was that the referees knew nothing (literally!) about late-model GM V8s...they had dealt exclusively with imports. It took 3 seperate trips, several hundred $$ in extra work, and 2 calls to Sacramento before they finally admitted they were wrong and I was right.

The 2nd step, the emissions check, was based on the 1991 light truck standards. Did everyone follow that? Its tricky! The 1st step was a visual check to make sure the engine was what I claimed it was, the 2nd step was to make sure the emissions met the original truck standards.

So now I\'m (finally!!) legal

Hope this helps, although I suppose every state is different and we\'re the worst!

up here im lucky...so far....they don\'t require emissions yet http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif but i think we\'re only a year or to away.

anyway, my great idea. we all write to our congressmen and get them to change the law from the emissions requirements for the year of the vehicle to the year of the engine! see, it\'s kinda stupid to go by the year off the truck, cuz the truck doesn\'t cause emissions, the engine does!!! that way i can put a 1980 in my truck!!!!!!!!! worth a try LOL.
