View Full Version : Cold Air Induction Question

I\'m worried about how hot it gets under the hood of my V8Sonoma. With OBDII I can monitor the temperature of the intake, and it runs over 150 F...and that\'s not on the hottest days. When the Taurus fan kicks on I get this huge blast of heat thru the window, so I know I need to do something.

So OK...I searched this forum and didn\'t come up with much...except I\'ve seen that others are worried about the same thing. My question is, did anyone rig up cold air induction, how did you do it and how well does it work?

My setup is with an L31, so I think I need to take it from the passenger side. The hole in the core support down by the light is pretty well blocked with the AC condenser. I\'m a little afraid to cut into the wheel well ... won\'t that flood everything when it rains? Has anyone tried cutting hood louvers?

If you can...please post some pics of what you did.

Thanks for your advice,

Dave http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif

I put a \'air induction\' or \'ram air\' in my 4x4 for the excatly the reasons you stated. Basicly I used a stock type air cleaner and the air tube duct work. I routed it through the support above the rad and below the support. See my pics. I did see a big drop in operating temp. My truck used to get hot sitting at an idle for 3 min. Now it doesn\'t. What helps make it work is that the cool air is coming from in front of the rad and it is not suckilng hot air into the engine.

The only draw back is that it doesn\'t look \'trick\'. I did it for $$. I didn\'t want to overeat my engine and have to buy or rebuild it again.

You could fab something like the late 60\'s 442\'s used. Two scoops at the bottom of the bumper with flexible ducting up to the engine. It looked trick on the Olds.

Thanks for your replies, guys.

I checked your pics, Spacecadet. Looks like you still have the rubber air dam on top of the core support. I can\'t tell from the pic where the air gets in. Do you leave the hood open a little or does it come through the top of the core support somehow? How does the inlet for the air duct look...is it kind of a long slot that fits up on top of the support? Wish I could swing by and look at it this Sunday, but I guess it would be a bit of a drive. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif

I was thinking of something like you mentioned, Jaydee. I could fab something into the air dam, but there are dxxx few places where I could take a duct down past the engine to get there. Do either of you have any idea whether heavy rain can be a problem with a cold air intake...especially with something down low?

I kept my intakes up to get more of a ram effect.. Pics @ http://community.webshots.com/user/gbaronetxcr

Thanks GBaronet...I see what you did. That\'s cool. I\'ll check when I get off work and see if that might work for me, I can\'t remember just what\'s behind the support there.

Where did you get those intakes you put in the support, what did they come out of? Is that clothes-dryer duct you used?

Your truck is about identical to mine, at least to start with! Did yours have the 2.5 4?

Had a 2.8 5sp.

Used a ramairbox.com unit. He had the alumium duct, it\'s flexible and expandable for lenght. The rubberized 4\" duct was $$$

I ran through a wreckinh yard looking for 4\" ducts and adpater two. I run a taure 3 core rad and had just enought room befoe the main rad supports.

I put the rubber piece on top of the rad support to help prevent air from passing through thier. I put the end of the unit between the top off the rad and the bottom of the rad supports top. Thier is @ an inch to 1 1/2 clearnce. I put a additional rubber piece aroung the rest of the area to prevent any air from sneaking behind the rad and not going through it.

I will try to get more pics, that are a little more descriptive.

I\'m going to take a look this weekend and see if this will work for me.

Thanks for your suggestions! http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif

I think I might be able to locate a round/straight K&N in the space under the battery. Part of the problem I\'m having is that I can\'t use something like the ram-air type. The vortec uses a MAF sensor so all the air has to run through that. Now I have to figure out how to get lots of cool air but no rain into that space! http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_confused.gif

It works!! I located the filter under the battery tray and it has really dropped the intake temp, even though I still haven\'t figured out how to duct cool air into that space. I\'ve uploaded pics into the Gallery FAQ Cooling section if anyone is interested.

Thanks for everyone\'s suggestions!
