I\'m going to be doing a V8 swap into my 85 S10 4x4. It\'s lifted 5\".
I have everything picked out that I need except for engine. I want to do this right, but not spend a ton of money either. I don\'t need crazy HP as reliability is the most important thing and any V8 will be an upgrade for me.
I\'m looking at the GM 260hp Crate 350. Its around $1300 but I\'m open to other ideas.

Any ideas?

sounds good to me...maybe a little more power with the 350 h.o motor...but that 260 horse power motor is a good motor

If you just put a bigger cam in it you could make a lot more power without a huge increase in cost.
Edit: $1300 for an assembled motor ain\'t bad.

If reliability is your prime concern, have you considered using 97 or so Vortec 350. The wiring is a bit more work and money, but the improvement in driveablity is more than worth it. Particularly in the frozen tundra part of the USA or in the provinces farther north.
I went to school in MN, it\'s not the end of the earth, but you can see it from there. All the wild cams and big carbs work fine in the south, but a 4x4 up here (WI) is a snow digger.

It would be driven primarily in the winter. I have a thunderbird for the summer time http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif
I forgot to mention that currently on my 3.4 (not 4.3) that I have a Holley Commander 950 TBI setup 650cfm 4bl. So i will be using that setup with my new engine. Should making the swap easier since all that wiring etc is done.

I bought the Goodwrench 350 after the 305 blew up...
I love this motor! Can\'t go wrong with a brand new 4 bolt main 350 for that cheap...
Since my purchase, I took the engine out, ported the heads, added an MSD ignition, and installed a Compcam XE-262 cam.

That goodwrench 350 is definitely your best bet. You will be hard pressed to find a better price on a motor with a warranty as good as gm\'s. Then if you want you can always upgrade. My friend has a zz4 in his 68 camaro it runs awesome, I now wish I had spent the money on a gm crate motor.
