Has anyone ever used the Rear-end support covers like the one summitracing sells? (http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=23523) How much do they help? Are they worth it? I\'m not building a drag racer. Just the once in a while stoplight drags. THanks

I disagree, its DEFINATELY not all for looks. Those rear end support covers have 2 long bolts with flat ends on them and are torqued down when the cover is on. This puts preload on the carrier bearings. Preventing the torque from tweaking your rear. My buddy tweaked the rear in his 95 impala.. heavy car and a LEAD FOOT. Took the carrier out to put in a nice new posi.. went to put it back in.. yea right .. that shit was tweaked so bad the bolts were almost 1/4\" from linng up!! Just becuz your truck is lighter than an IMP *I* personally would\'nt take the chance.. all the more reason TO put one on. Less weight, more power and if you build it right and it hooks without a problem.. its gunna tweak eventually if its not supported properly.

I don\'t think they are as functional as the manufactures want you to think they are. The bolts that put pressure on the carriers are only torqued to 25 ft/lbs. so they don\'t add that much support. You can see a pick of the one on my truck here (http://www.chriscristo.com). Last pgae of the gallery I think....

If you dont think they are as functional as they say they are... why do you have one on your truck? They are $130, not a cheap look pretty part. Besides, would you rather have ZERO preload on your carrier bearings or some?

I bought it not knowing that it only added minimal support to the carriers. If I knew that at the time, I wouldn\'t have bought it.

25 Ft Lbs???
I just went through this a few weeks ago with an \"ultimate\" cover on a dana 60...it was a freinds truck and I didn\'t know the torque...called ultimate up and they said 5 Ftlbs...
They specified to make the sure the studs didn\'t move when tightening the locknuts....
Too much will be as bad as having none at all, as it will distort the caps...
I personally am a believer in the design....

OK, maybe you are right. 5 ft lbs. does ring a bell now that you mention it. It\'s been a while since I put it on...
