Hey guys, i\'ve got a question that isn\'t really s10 specific, but i think it is more of a general gm thing. And this site is always the best site for tech info on stuff.
Has anyone removed their steering wheel that contains an airbag?
I\'ve got to remove my steering wheel in my 96 monte carlo to fix the turn signal switch, but i have no idea how to disengage the airbag, or how to remove the airbag safely. If anyone has done this, could you please tell me how to do it correctly. I don\'t want the thing going off in my face while trying to remove.
Thanks in advance

I DID ONE IN A 96 VAN, PULLED THE AIR BAG FUSE, AND WENT ABOUT THE NORMAL REMOVAL PROCEDURE. I HAD TO REMOVE SOME EXTRA (DON\'T KNOW WHAT IT ALL WAS) STUFF. NO AIR BAG DEPLYMENT WITHOUT HE FUSE THOUGH

i was reading something about taht there is a module that holds a charge even if you pull the fuse, that would deploy the bag anyways. Is this correct?
So far, it seems you need to pull the fuse, disconnect battery, unplug some plug at the base of the steering column, wait ten min. then remove the airbag, steering wheel, etc.
Does this sound right to anyone familiar with doing this?

yeah, i did wait a while, but did not disconnect anything at the base of the column. i was still nervous, but all was ok

We were told on the fire dept by the GM tech center that it is possible after an accident for an airbag to go off regardless of if the battery is disconnected or not. For the same reason just stated- there is a charge held in a module. They did say that it is unlikely, but they showed us with a test light that there is a charge still held.

That\'s what i\'ve sort of been getting from what i\'ve read that there is a charge, but after unhooking the battery, it apparently loses charge in 10-15 min.
I don\'t know whether i\'m going to have to use a torx driver to get the airbag assembly off, or whether there are some sort of clips holding it on.
Do you guys think the GM Dealer would tell me if i called them, or would they just tell me to piss off and bring it in to them?
Go figure all this happens after i sell the car and am trying to get it safetied for the guy.
JEEZ. Always my luck!!!
