hey, i currently have a 750 edlebrock carb with mechanicle secondaries, and the next step leaner metering rods, i have tried to setup my carb by the way that the book says, but have been kinda unsuccessful. its not that it doesnt run well, but it seems like it is running rich. my timing is setup intial 12 degrees. i am not quite sure what the full advance is, but i know it isnt the timming. the exaust smells ok at an idle, but when i get on it, there is a little black smoke out the back, wich is an indication of rich, but what should i do? smaller rods, jets? also is there a better way to setup the carb than by watching the rpm and adjusting the mixture screws?
Thanks!
Kevin
PS lately, after running shell 93 in it, the truck has lost all power when hitting the secondaries. it seems to stumble and just about die, but if i let off, it runs fine, its just when i hit the secondaries at higher revs, like 4500-6000rpm. the pump is a holley red electronic. i cleaned out the carb once and it ran better for like 5 mins, then it got bad again. could it be something in the fuel? or also to do with the mixture?

Find an old timer that is fimilar with Carter AFB\'s. They are the same as the Edelbrocks.
Good luck on your troubles.

The smoke could be alot of things. Bad valve seals, rings going bad....etc etc. And the stuttering when the secondarys open is probably your timing. You may also have a vacuum leak that is causing your timing not to advance when the secondarys open.

the motor is fresh, has like 3000 miles on it since pro rebuild, including heads. as for the vacume leak, i checked it out there isnt one. i was thinkin it could be the weights on the distributor gettin stuck, but it was just rebuilt the same time the motor was done! so i am lost. when i go home i am gonna take the distributor out and check it out.

I know on the Demon I have there are constant vacuum and variable or intermittent vacuum ports. I forget which is which, but the kick down for the trans needs one kind of port, while the vacuum advance on the dist. needs the other. Try switching vacuum ports and see if anything gets better. Also, just a suggestion, since you say it\'s not the timing, but from what little experience I\'ve had, most small block chevys like more like 15 or 16 degrees initial with around 34-36 total. I think the stock timing is set for 12 degrees initial, so if you\'ve got any hop-up parts you might want to try adding some more advance. And the best way to set mixture screws is to use a vacuum gauge.

my trans is a mechanical kick down, the vacume port is the timed one for the vacume advance, the dist also has a mechanical advance that i think may be sticking. as for 15-16 degrees advance??? thats a little high, i have mine at 14 degrees and the total at like 36 degrees.

You say that the problems occur @ 4500-6000 RPMs, my question is what distributor are you running? If it is an HEI your coil could be the culprit. It is well known that HEI stock coils can\'t handle that kind of RPM. Also just because the distributor is NEW doesn\'t mean it\'s GOOD.

yeah, i know about that, the coil is a brand new accel high output coil, the chip is the new accel and the pickup is also a new aftermarket one. but i just dont understand why it would die like this. wait, are there mechanical advance weights in the hei distributor? i cant remember off the top of my head, i have to look at it when i get home, the wierd thing is that it has worked fine for the past 2500 or so miles, and then i ran some shell 93 in it twice, and it started with the problems, thats the only thing that i can see is causing the trouble, but i even cleaned the carb and it still does it! even if its not the gas, i am never puttin that shell crap in there again, only sunoco 94 from now on!!!

The vacuum line that goes to the trans is the modulator not a kickdown.
