View Full Version : Drag racing with air bags??

I was wondering if you guys could give me opinions about using air bags on the track. I want my truck to hook, but I also love that super slammed look. My truck will mostly be used on the street, but I\'d like to run it at least a few times for bragging rights, if for nothing else. I was wondering if anyone had any experience using bags on the strip. My current plan is to set up a parellel 4 link with bags. How much of a difference would using coilovers instead of bags make? Would a ladder bar set up work better with bags than a four link? I\'d really love to use bags, but if it\'s gonna really hurt my traction I\'ll probably go with ladder bars and coilovers. I\'m also planning on welding up new rear frame rails and mini-tubbing the truck to fit a 20x12 or 20x10 inch wheel with lots of reverse offset for the street. This will also obviously let me run a wider slick on the track, so I WILL have the advantage of lots of rubber on the ground.

Oh yeah, I\'m looking at between 425-450 hp at the wheels, plus I plan on adding a 150hp plate nitrous system. Will bags even be able to handle that kind of power?

I think if you use bags with 4-links and a pan-hard bar you\'ll be fine... but then I have no experience with bags and strips so I\'ll let the experts handle this.

As far as the bags taking the power,I\'m quite sure they would. Bags are used on applications ranging from passenger vehicles to freight liners which carry tons and tons. A lot of people use them for towing and hauling. I\'d look for a weight rating on it to give you an idea of what it can handle but those things are tough as shit.

A lot of sanctioning bodies don\'t allow adjustable suspensions. The offer an unfair advantage due to the ability to jack weight at the starting line and lower the vehicle down track to reduce wind resistance. Check with your local track and see if you can run still. Otherwise bags will work great.

if you install the bags in a good spot you should be able install coilover mounts so when you get to the track all you have to do is bolt them in. my bracks and ladder bars work great for traction but 4 link is the only way to go.

They will work great. But, like Knudsonm said, most won\'t let you race.

Air up the front on launch, slamm it after like the 60 ft mark. Aids in weight transfer, then aerodymamics.

this is my first post but as for bags handling the torque i dont have trouble with my bag setup on my gmc s15 xcab with a 350.i have a cantilever setup on mine and i dont have wheel hop or nothing.if you plan on minitubbing and running 20x12s you got some deep ass pockets my friend.i looked into 18x7 and 18x13s ith tires and the phttp://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/smileJap.gif was 2500$ i couldnt even think what 20x12s would be.so i was thinking about minitubs.i got a phttp://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/smileJap.gif from aftermarket wholesalers in truckin magazine got boyd coddingtons motorious 17x7 and 17x11 for 1031$ shipped which is more my phttp://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/smileJap.gif.good luck man

the rear will pop if you hook good from the masive weight transfer 3000 lbs on the rear. if you pull a small weelie the front will pop when you land.

Are you sure that\'ll happen? Wouldn\'t the shocks absorb enough of the weight transfer? I know those bags are pretty tough. What about people using air bag set-ups like hydraulics and hopping with them? I\'ve seen people hopping their trucks like 2 feet or more and they aren\'t popping the bags when they land. Some guys are even getting all 4 wheels off the ground without any problems.

They won\'t pop. Then again, you\'re talking ride height airbags right? There are the ones for drag racing specifically and they take all the power you can dish out.

A properly set up 4-link will allow the vehicle to be low and mean and hook in a carwash.

Look at the Pro Stock S10s and the Pro Stock cars.
