The other day I went to a local muffler shop to get exhuast put on my 89 short bed. The shop told me that since it is an 89 even though it has a 350 it still has to have a Cat. on it. They also said that it can only be single exhuast, no dual. They sayed that it is a federal Law. I even live in a county of the state that does not require emmissions testing. Is this bullshit true? And what is up with the single exhuast $580 quote that they gave me? what should I do?

find a welder that will do it for you. just buy a few 90\'s if need be and you can get pipe from your local muffler shop or summit/jegs. those are the people that dont know the law and are out to rip ya off. i f***in hate people like that. you do have to have cats by law. anything manufactred with smog equipment must have it forever. regardless of what size motor you swap it with. but you can leagally put any size and how ever many different pipes you want. as long as they all have cats. that guy is a lazy peice of crap that wants to steal for a living instead of doing a good job for a fair price. if there is no one else in your area start looking for a local welder to hire because that will be you only chance?? good luck

that is kinda high. i payed $400 for mine and that was a custom 2.5 inch y pipe to a single 3 inch cat to a 3in in flowmaster with dual 2.5 outs. I was going to run true duals but it woulda bee to much trouble the way my fuel lines are and my auto shift linkage. Plus if you use a highflow cat you will only lose like 5 hp

random technolagy actually shows more power and more torque from a single exhaust with duel cats on the new camaros and trans ams with the ls1. they are direct replacement systems. the cats are expensive but worth the money if you are going to put cats on. i am leaving them off. south louisiana is no where near worried about smog control. i can still go to inspection stations and get a sticker for the blinkers, horn and so forth. the dont even look under neith!! COOL.

in wi, only the SE area (ie milwaukee), requires a smog test and i don\'t have to put any emmissions stuff on mine.

Most of the big retail exaust places will not do this for you.(Midas , places like this) There is a huge fine if they get caught doing this. Most small independent shops don\'t have a problem doing this work for you. He is right that fed. law says it must retain the cat. The law for cats is it must have howerever many it had factory and in the same place. You can not switch to duels and still be legal if your vehicle came with single exaust. With an engine swap the law says the emissions must be used from whichever year is newer, the motor or the chasis. If you don\'t have to get it inspected then all this doesn\'t matter cause no one will know.

I used a dual inlet dual outlet cat. That way it has only one cat but is still kind of like duals.

Might be a law, but not always followed.
My muffler guys put 3\" Duals on for $100(i brought the mufflers) then I tipped them $40

your exhaust guy is telling the truth. ZR1 - why would he say that to MAKE money? If he said you needed a cat on each pipe he could charge more for labor plus mark-up the cost of the cats.
whatever the vehicle was originally equipped with is what it needs to have to be legal - ie: single exahust into single cat and single muffler.
When I was first looking for someone to do my exhaust a couple guys said they wouldn\'t do it unless they put on cats. You\'ll have to shop around for someone who will do what you want. You can also tell them it\'s a race car and will be trailered to and from the drag strip.
My exhaust cost $350 for aluminized, mandrel bent true duals from the collectors straight out the back. I supplied the mufflers though.
