I am considering buying a posi kit for my 1998 2wd stock 10 bolt rear end.

I have talked to more than 1 person about this and get conflicting answers.

Is it difficult to do or isn\'t it?

I consider myself to be above average as far as being mechanically inclined but have never really did any rear end work.

I have access to a lot of \"tool & Die\" resources...mics, calipers indicators etc.

Is this something that a novice with a lot of mechanical ability can do?

Is the cost around $100.

What if I want to change the gear ratio?

Will 1 kit work for different ratios or do I have to buy a new kit if I decide to chage from a 373 to lets say a 303 if there is such a thing?

The posi case for a 3.08 and numerically lower is different than the 3.23 and numerically higher. Changing a case isnt that hard, but changing a ratio can be. You can usually try to get away with using the original shims, and that would make it easier, but sometimes you cant. You have to check the pattern. Also, you will need a dial indicator w/ a magnetic base preferably, a in/lb torque wrench, and a caliper to measure the shims. If you are going to try it yourself let me know, I can get you a decent set of instruction and a few tips.

No doubt I am going to do it. I think I will stick with the original gear for now, which if I understand you correctly; I can change it later but only down to a 3.23 (unless I buy a new kit?). I have all the tools you mentioned so that’s no problem. The instructions and tips would be greatly appreciated.

Wish I could get more pics uploaded but that part of this web sit is a little confusing to me.

Also Like your bike projects, I have a Bad Ass Custom Harley. Rode it all the way to Key Wes this summer from MI.

That is correct. If you have a 3.73 you can go down to a 3.23 with the same diff case. Ill try to scan some instructions I have so you can look them over, or maybe find you a good internet link.
