I have a open end with 3,08? gears i was looking at a posi unit from jegs for $300 and new 3.23 gears much hp would someting like that be able to handle? Can the stock axles handle it? i am going to have around 370-400hp and 340 lb/ft torque and my truck will weigh about 2750 lbs.

i\'d say it could handle it...
my freinds t/a handles about 450hp like nothin thats with a 2500 stall and slicks... so it should handle it no problem considering they are the same rear end and his is stock...
however his dad has a studabaker champion with a s-10 diff and he keeps twisting axles but it weighs about 800lb\'s more than a s-10 and it has a blown 350 in it probably about 600hp too so thats totaly different
If you have alot of horsepower and you are hooking up....thats when you could break something

$300! http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_eek.gif http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_eek.gif Just get a new Zexel limited slip Camaro takout for $99 from SLP. It will handle that hp just fine unless you are running slicks. If you have a 82-88 truck, you will also need to get a set of late model 28 spline axles from the bone yard.
If you are running slicks, look for a 8.5\" axle out of a late model 2wd 4.3 5-speed S10. Some have the 8.5\" while I have seen others with a 7.5\" It might be hard to find, but it will bolt right in and last much longer than a 7.5\" will.

horse power is not what breaks rear ends, torque is what breaks stuff along with power shifting and hard traction http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif

As soon as my stocker goes im going to learn a lesson for all of us. I plan on breaking the stock rear end the first time to the track this year, and if not we can all be that we\'re safe with our rearends just about. If so im going to try something else that not many want to try. Im going to buy the Eaton posi unit for the 7 5/8\'\' rear and leave the original axels (if they\'re still usable) and original gears and see how far i can push them. This will give all of us S10V8ers some #\'s to work with on how fast/far you can go on a stock rear. Im betting you can go pretty damn far with it.

Kinda risky-don\'t you think? If that sucker hooks and one of those axles break it could pull you towards the wall OR your opponent. With that motor of yours it could happen very fast! That\'s why the NHRA is very picky about after market axles, c-clip eliminators and spools. Been some really nice rides hit that wall/flip due to an axle problem! If the center section has a major come-apart, depending on what that drive shaft does, you could be picking up transmission pieces too. Not trying to be a jerk I just hate to see a lot of your work/money go down the tubes due to an avoidable catastrophic rear end failure.http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_eek.gif

I\'ll take some of that bet.http://www.members.cox.net/martin777/banana.gif\" BORDER=\"0\" BORDER=\"0\" BORDER=\"0\" BORDER=\"0\" BORDER=\"0\" BORDER=\"0" BORDER="0
Could be an expensive lesson. Good luck.

This rear has been through hell and back already. No problems yet. They have 28 splines factory, just like the ls1\'s. Only real difference is that they are not limited slip. I am going to change that. Using the Eaton (which are known for they\'re strength) and stock axels im betting ill be able to go 10s leaving off the foot brake. Now if i use the transbrake that would be differnt. Then im gonna need at least an 8.8 with 35 splines and a good spool. It may turn out to be a $500 lesson but just think of what can be said for the stock s10 rears when a topic like this one pops up. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif

From the factory? I wasnt aware that they made them limited slip in the earlier trucks. I guess you lear something new every day.

Came across this thread while searching for c-clip eliminator info. Aftermarket axle manufacturers have formulas for how much torque an axle can handle.

I had alot of luck with my stock rear for almost a year of playing at the track. I pulled a 4:10 gear and a posi unti out of a 4 wheel drive blazer and loved it...until, aout 4 weeks ago as I was coming off of the line. somethnig snapped. at first I thought the driveshaft was all that broke. then when I put in the new one the pinion would not turn. As I pulled the cover off and parts began to fill my drain pan I knew it was over. Pretty cool though, that was the first carrier I ever seen ripped completley into two pieces. so I up graded to the late model 28 spline and carrier with the same ratio adn with crossed fingers have had good luck so far.

i always thought welding spider gears was cool and not running c-clip eliminators. until i saw a 1979 monte carlo (piece -o- s#!*) brake a axle faster car catching him, beatiful 1969 barracuda , black white interior , hemi $1000\'s of dollars. well he hit that wheel and axle , rolled it 5 times. there rebuilding it now matching numbers car i guess.
