i also have a 1999 ext cab 2wd s-10 4.3. it has a rattle sounds exactly like a shock with the rubbers missing. i\'ve replaced shocks with nitro bell tech\'s, installed a new lower ball joint, had about 1/32 movement. i\'m about at my witts with this one. i\'ve looked for cracks in the frame, a-arm. wheel bearings are tight. any body have any other suggestions other than the dealers answer (they all do that after 50,000 miles )

Maybe the sway bar links? When the truck is lifted off the ground they can appear tight but can have play at ride height.

Maybe you lost some camber shims on the upper control arm. Control arm bushings, the other ball joints, tie rods, etc.....

I was thinking along the lines of mzoomra. I also wondered if a battery could make that sound if it was not tight.

If the sway bar and control arms check out OK, you might want to look at the bumper brackets.... all tight?
....... The battery? I don\'t think that would be bouncing around with normal driving, but it SHOULD be clamped tight, ya never know.
........... Oh yeah, another thing, (but not likely) got hub-caps of any sort? Sometimes centers come loose, and clunk around. not to mention the loose lug nut inside the center cap! Yeah, it\'s happened!

maybe check the exhaust, heat shileds tend to rattle, maybe a loose clamp or converter with pieces broken internally.

Check the brake calipers. I have seen the bushing wear and the calipers will rattle when the brakes are not appiled. Also the upper pin has a tendancy of breaking on vehicles that do alot of stop and go driving. The other thing I would check is the wheel bearings. I doubt it is the problem but if they have excesive play they will sometimes \'rattle\' when hitting bumps.

it\'s coming from the left front area. another mech. told me to hit some bumps at hard braking to eleminate if it was the calipers , it did not change the noise. only guess is something in the frame rails like a socket or motor mounts hell i don\'t know
