I\'ve got a slight problem with my 700R. Because it came out of a big ass station wagon it\'s tuned for a heavy car. This ain\'t good because when it shifts from 1st to 2nd, it chirps the tires almost every time. Now I know this might sound fun to some of you, but because it\'s might daily driver and I live in Ohio where the weather is always crappy, I need to get this fixed. Every time I go around a corner while barely pushing the throttle it feels like it\'s going to slide out from underneath me, and if it\'s snowy or raining I\'m screwed. If I take my truck to a transmission shop and ask them to ease the shift points, how much is this going to cost me? Will I have to take the tranny out for them to work on it?

adjusting the tv cable will only make it shift later or soon it\'s not going to make it shift harder or anything... just screw it and let it shift hard... more fun... 700r\'s are desighned to shift hard my dad\'s astro minivan will spin the tires into second if you rug it.. so it\'s normal for a 700r

Wow hold on here,
Adjusting the TV cable changes the way everything in the tranny works including how hard it shifts.
When i first got my truck back from the tranny shop i thought i was gonna loose the hlaf of my frame it shifted so hard.
I also couldnt hold overdrive.
With a few clickes on the tv cable it was all fixed.
Just play with the adjustment on the tv cable. dont move it too much at a time. it may take your a dozen adjustments to get it right just be paitent.

Yeah you\'re right those Xenia cops are picky, but the Sheriff\'s department knows what I have in it because my girlfriend\'s dad is one of the Lieutenet(?) sheriffs. They don\'t care though, so that\'s cool....
For the person who said \"drive it and don\'t worry about it\", you\'re an idiot if you think I\'m going to ruin all of that hard work by either 1) screwing up the rear end or 2) turning the truck around in the weather and smashing into something or someone.
For the rest of you, thank you for your help and I think my weekend is now filled with more work...

Ok could you please explain to me what the TV cable is? Is that the same thing as the kickdown cable? If it\'s different, where is it located?

the TV(throttle valve) cable looks like the older kickdown cable found on TH350 and Th400 trannies but it does much more. The TV cable controls everything the tranny does. It controls shift point, firmness, timing, line pressure. If it is misadjusted you can wreck a 700R4 fast.
To adjust it you need to push in the little button on the adjuster and slide the cable all the way in. Release the button and open the throttle all the way by hand. As the throttle is opened you will hear a series of clicks as the TV self-adjusts itself. Drive it and see how it works. You can then adjust it slightly a few clicks either way from this base adjustment.
I had a problem with my 700R4 after my swap and I finally redesigned the whole throttle arm and linkage now it shifts perfectly. Take your time and be careful and a 700R4 will last a long time. They have gotten a bad reputation because people don\'t adjust the TV cable right and they burn up clutches.

Well im glad soomeone else wrote that all out so i didnt have to haha.
But if your comfortable with your tranny take it to a good shop and ask them to try and adjust it.
If there really good they will know how to get it perfect.

I don\'t think I have a throttle valve cable. The tranny and engine are out of a 85\' Caprice, and I converted the engine from TBI to carbed. Any help?

if your cable is not hooked up to your transmission it will not shift, you would have to manually shift it.if it shifts too hard for you you can soften the shift by pushing the button on the cable by the brackrt and sliding the bullet out of the cable dont go to far a little adjustment is a big difference

well i don\'t know about you but i\'m pretty sure my truck has to shift harder...i\'ve got a 700r with b&m bands and a stage 2 shift kit in it... it barks into third gear for christ sakes... and anytime i\'ve ever adjusted the tv cable on mine all it does is changes the shift points and don\'t give me this shit about screwing up your rear end because of it shifting so hard... i can\'t see it happening... mine is the stock 7 5/8\" rear end and i have over 400hp and like i said i bark the tires into 3rd (245/50R16\'s) and i havn\'t had a problem yet and i ABUSE my truck... it\'s a daily driver and i basically have 2 positions on the trottle.... on and off... it sees the track every weekend so i highly doubt your rear end is gunna get screwed... the earlier a 700r shifts the softer it\'s gunna shift...same with any trans... the tv cable doesn\'t control the line pressure... the pump driven by the convertor controlls line pressure which is controlled by rpm... the higher the shift point the more line pressure.... so bascially ther tv cable adjusts the shift point and everything else follows
