I read about thirty threads about headers here and I still am not sure which headers I need...??!!??
Building a SBC 383 with Lunati solid lift cam (500), ProAction AL heads, 3.73 9 inch rear with a 700 R4 tranny. Last motor my mech built just like this one had 587 hp and over 550 lbs torque at the flywheel on the dyno. I am expecting 475 ish in my truck, and I am stuck on headers. I like the look of the Sandersons. Probably ought to go with the 1 & 5/8\'s, but is there a need to step up to the 1 & 3/4\'s?? This is going to be a street truck.
Well, it started out to be, but I just keep adding!!

I\'d say you are on the right track... Here\'s the way I see it.
* If it\'s gonna see any street use, go with the shorties, Sanderson comes to mind. I don\'t like leaky headers.
* 1-5/8\".... why? I\'m guessing I have 425 HP on a good day, consistent low 12s @ 110-111 MPH. I switched from 1-1/2 to 1-5/8\" Sandersons, and it didn\'t help one tiny bit. So knowing that, I\'d think that 1-5/8\" would be suitable for about 475.

I agree, I had 1 1/2\" then went to 1 5/8\" and again switched to the 1 3/4\" and didnt notice much difference at all, besides the new lack of space for my bigger header to fit.
1 3/4\" werent worth it in my situation. I had a 350, 11:1, AFR 195s, solid roller 248 dur @.050 .613 lift.
I would go with 1 5/8\" IMO

Are the Sanderson CS-11\'s the shorties??
My bad on the cam (it is 550 lift)
Going to run Holley 750HP carb too. Victor Jr intake and a new (MSD clone) type ignition. Just trying to make my $$ well spent.
I also found some SBC headers on ebay. They were 310 for big tubes. I would rather support the site by ordering them here though....

350 on up run better with 1-3/4 you just need the correct gear.bigger tubes = more ex scavenging so with that you need more RPM to keep it up.350s are known to have good tq the larger the c.i. the more tq you will get why not gain a lil more hp at the top.i noticed a slight loss of power in my blazer on a borrowed set of 1-3/4 sandersons when i switched to 1-5/8 heddmans the loss was 2tenths at the track.
