I am starting a V8 swap shortly in my truck but still havent made up my mind on what i want to do. Either i want a 383 or a built 350. What would produce better numbers as far as HP and 1/4? This truck hopefully will be a street/drag application. Thanks for your input.

383 all the way, you just can\'t make up for ci. i currently have a 350 and am going 383, just my 2cents. chris

A good 383 is not really much more money that a 350, so go with the 383

i would have to say to go with the 383 to they make really dang good power down low to get you off the line. well thats what i heard. good luck on your build. nick

Depending on your buget sir. Most will tell you 383. It will make more ponies than a 350 only if you put \"GOOD\" heads on it. AIf you don\'t, a nice the 350 will stay with the 383 all day long.
Just my 2 cents, I\'ve been building motors for 30 years by the way.

well, i\'ve been told to go with the AFR heads, but haven\'t done much research myself

Yes, Go with AFR heads, if it is for street only go 180cc, you will have sick low end torque with the smaller runner, if you are street and strip, try the 195cc runners. they are around 1299 or so for a pair.

people have said for a while that a 383 will make more power than a 350,no doubt there!but where do you want the power you should gain 20-30 hp more but the tq is way more http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif and if you ask me i will take tq any day,you can have a base eagle crank for 200.00,a set of speed-pro 2491s for 360.00 and a set of rods that will clear w/o work will run 300+ depending on the rod you select for the money its worth it to have a low RPM motor that makes big block tq numbers,good luck on your build.........as for heads you need 195-210 on a stroker you wont have to worry about loosing as much tq with a stroker or a larger c.i. motor...........

For the cost of rebuilding a 350, vs. the cost of building a 383, You might as well do the 383. It will end up costing a little more, due to the clearancing needed in teh block, and parts alone, are still a bit more expensive that 350 parts, But its worth it. Its a cool motor to have, and they do make big #\'s down low on the powerband. BUT it depends on where you need that power, If you are towing, you will need all the torque off the line you can get. But for som applications, you may want a higher revving engine, along with more torque at the top of the powerband. But you can always do a 383, to get the low end, and bottle feed it for when you need that extra boost up top.

if you have a 350 build it now you can always put a 383 or 434 like i will some day in it.my sbc is producing 500-550 hp .my cool neigbers came over last week and complained it was to loud inside the closed garage. it does sound sweet!!!

i would say it all depends on what parts you already have. if you are going from scratch then build the 383. it will only cost a few hundred more to get the block clearanced and other machine work performed to make it right. but if you have a 350 complete then stick with what you got and build it up for a bit less using the same power parts you would have used for the 383.
but if you have a 350 with a bad crank then go for the 383 because you would have to tear it all down to get it balanced anyway.
like i said, it depends on where you start. or better yet find a 400 and go from there.

You can build a 350 to match HP #s, but the bigger motor will out torque a smaller one, so all things being equal, the 383 will out accelerate a 350.
