i want to put an hei setup in my truck. the motor mounts i have say that the firewall must be clearenced about 2 inches. anybody have experience? is it absolutely neccesary or are they just covering there asses? if it is needed, is it easier to adjust the firewall with a hammer like they recomend, or just cut it out and weld it up? i can weld, so that is not a problem, but if i dont have to i dont want to. thanks

I\'ve got a HEI distributor in my truck. I\'ve never had any clearance problems. The motors back 1.5\" at least

i ran hei with the mount plates that mount to the engine. and had plenty of room the only thing was i had to turn the dist. to get to the one back holddown for the cap

I run a hei,the only thing with mine is you cant get the cap off where it sets, but it has alot of room for turning.

i used the advance adapters plates that bolt to the motor with stock 2.8 mounts. i didnt have to touch the firewall where the hei goes. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif
I used the stealth conversion mounts and didn\'t need to mod the firewall any for the cap, however the clearance is on bout 1/4 inch, and with the torque of the engine it sometimes moves the cap, bummer.

ok ...here it is...if your truck had a v-6 in it from the factory .than no hammering is needed ...but if your truck is like mine was and had a 4-bangger in it than about 2-3 in of hammering is required ..and that is a fact

HEI\'s suck. Get a different distributor/ignition box/coil combo right away. HEI\'s are made for stock engines and even then they are a little suspect.

my 92 had no curve where the distubor went at all ...like the 6 cylinder does...maybe different years are different...as for the hei ...i put in a hotter coil and better module and i run my up to 8000 a lot and it never has missed a beat ,,,and they are so easy to hook up ...just one hot wire and your tach and your done

I ran an HEI for a while and i did have to hammer the firewall back about 2 inches to get the cap on, but after i got it on i had plenty of room to adj. the timing. MSD Pro-billet dist. have alot of advantages over the HEI, as knudsonm said i do believe that they are not as good as others, i think they are out of date when it comes to race engines, just like the old dual-point which everybody used to run on their race engines. They thought that they would never be replaced by anything better. And now you wont hardley find an engine with one.

I just bought a MSD 6AL/Pro Billet distributor and Blaster 2 coil today I\'ll post pics after I get it installed.

thanks for the help. i am going with the hei because it is what i have. if anyone would like to donate the $300 for the probillet setup, i would be more than gracious, since i can not afford it myself. i am 19 and making 400 bucks a week. the truck is a project i am building to tow my 72 datsun 510 racecar, which gets most of my money and attention. besides, my dad has had good luck with hei\'s in his 55 chevy\'s one of with was running a 383 stroker with aluminum heads and a tunnel ram with double pumpers. never got to run it at the track since it was barely finished when my stepmother divorced him and sold it to her boss. his freind who is a 6 or 7 time nhra doorslammer record holder also recomended the hei, which he uses on his racecars, which run quadrajet carbs. as 4 more said, its all about knowing how to use what ya have.

I\'d like to see an NHRA doorslammer running hei. Maybe in the 70\'swhen it was top of the line equipment, but no way in the last 15 or so years.

very good. people are paying attention. i talked to my dad, and he informed me that when he put on the tunnel ram he got rid of the hei. this was back in 89-90, when i was in 2nd grade, so forgive me. and yes, his friend was running competetively from the late 70\'s till about 5 years ago. noe he pretty much runs for fun. my point was that an hei will work, and is more than enough for my dail driver s15,especially on my budget.

What setup would you recommend people use?

I picked up a MSD 6AL and ProBillet Distributor and Blaster 2 coil at Checker Shucks and Kragen for $457. The distributor is going to free up a bunch of space by the firewall and I really wanted a rev limiter.

thats more than i paid for my truck. only 25 less if you count the parts car. then take away the 200 i got when i sold the turbo 400 out of it.
thats alot for some spark, but i guess if i had spent that much on it, and not the 25 i spent on my hei i wouldn\'t have a miss.

Your right an hei will work, otherwise they would have never been invented.LOL, but the debate was weather or not they are as good as the newer more advanced systems. And they\'re not.
