View Full Version : Tranny suggestions
Hey guys, I just registered a few minutes ago. I use mys10.com alot but theres not enough v8 info. Anyway, I have a 89 with a 350/700r4 combo, the r4 is fried and coming out once the weather breaks. I want to put in a stout th-350. It needs to handle around 450 maybe 475 horsepower. I was looking at maybe a TCI streetfighter or a Hughes. I don\'t really know who is best, they all seem like alot of money for what they are IMO. What do you guys think would be best for me. Its gonna be mostly track/saturday night cruise useage. 4:10 rear.

The 700R is a good tranny that can be built tough. The overdrive is VERY hard to beat if you ever get above 50mph in a \"cruise on the freeway\" situation.
Be honest with what you intend the vehicle to be, and how often it will see the highway.
No i didn\'t mean what type tranny I know i want a th-350 I just wanted to know what brand is best for the money and what not..or if maybe theres even companies or private guys out there that i don\'t know about that make great tranny\'s...Sorry about the mixup

haha I am going to suggest something a little different.. instead of spending that kind of money on a new tranny, why not have your r4 rebuilt with kevlar clutches and the like, a good tranny builder will be able to build you a tranny that will handle that power. I rebuilt my th-350 myself, used a B&M stage 2 shift kit, sand blasted all the metal bands, and when it shifts, it\'ll snap your head back. A tranny rebuild here with Kevlar clutches and performance goodies will run $450-$550 out the door.

Markymark is right. I would buy one from a local person that has built them for awhile. I bought one on ebay from Jackson Racing in SC. It was a good transmission, but after I found a guy locally, I would not do it again. I would also look at a power glide. They are the simplest and ceapest to rebuild.
