Spin the tires and see if it leaves dual streaks. Unless you have no engine right now.

adh383,
There are not many options to know for sure except open it up or talk to the person that owned it before that would know.
Limited slip, spools, welded, lockers, you just cant tell for sure.

That\'s a pretty good pic. I guess it wouldn\'t be much help to simply say that if there\'s anything besides spider gears in the carrier, it\'s a posi... Ya know, extra \"things\" in there. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif
......... off on a tangent......... I know the governor type posi units are wimpy, would they become instant \"toast\" in the gov. mech. was disabled, allowing full time posi?

If your truck still has the option sticker in the glove box, look for the \"G80\" option which is a posi-loc. That\'s the only factory posi they came with. If someone installed a limited slip, you can jack it up and turn one wheel by hand, and if the other turns the same way it\'s a posi, opposite way means open diff, but the clutches ont he posi could be worn so it may not turn at all. Best ways are: options sticker in glove box, burn out and count the streaks, or pop the cover off the diff and look inside.
