what vortec heads came on the 98 gmc truck with a 350? i know there are a couple of different castings just dont know if they used 1 particular set for that year truck or if they switch around?
the 98\'s had the l31\'s..those are the good ones. the 96\'s and i believe the 97\'s also had vortecs but they were different and not as good.

cool. i know the 96 is where the vortec started. and i know i can find the casting #\'s for the good vortecs. i was just wondering because the company my brother in law works for has a 98 gmc that someone drove with no water in the radiator and smoked the motor. he said i can have the long block when they pull it. so i will have the heads checked, cleaned, and shaved if they are the good ones!! plus the truck only had 41,000 highway miles on it. if i get them i will sell them for sure.
They also have a \'\'saw tooth\'\' pattern casted into them on..the front i believe.. it looks like 3 triangles

906\'s and 062\'s were both used during 96-98. Some say the 062\'s are the better head, but after a whole bunch of reading, it seems that one isn\'t really better than the other one, but that\'s just from lots of reading. I don\'t know the performance data off of each one. Anyone?
96-98 Yukon\'s, Suburban\'s, and Tahoe\'s all had the vortec heads if they had the 350 motor.
If i\'m wrong here, someone please correct me.
Cheers!
Yeah idk i\'ve heard one is better but i can\'t remember if its the 906\'s or the 062\'s I think its the 906\'s

the 906\'s are not the most desirable bolt on head. they had problems with the exhaust seat or something related. an experienced machinist will know hoe to remedy this. the 062 is the newer casting and had the problem fixed. this is the casting you would get if you were to buy then new from gm, summit, or jegs.
as far as the info on the 906\'s go it is hear say from my machinist, the heads on my 408 are 906\'s
yeah i wasn\'t positive. thanks for clearing it up tracker

i have to wait to get the motor 1st and then make sure they are still good. motor was ran hot for awhile till the motor blew. but not much. $200-$300 i guess. i know used they start around $400 and up. i will post them here as soon as i get them.
ok yeah the 906\'s don\'t have hardened exhaust valve seats and the 062\'s do.

Why would they ever not put hardened exhaust seats in any newer heads? Its not like were were all the sudden going to leaded gas again? I just have a hard time beliveing that.
One of the magazines said one casting was better than the other, for flow, but then retracted their statement.

i was under the impression that 1 had 64cc\'s and the other had 76cc\'s? could be wrong though?
no they\'re both 64 cc i believe

they are both 64cc. the early truck center bolt heads were 76cc and they werte called vortec also because of their swirl port design. but never were officially vortec till the 906\'s came out.

both have hardened seats and both are 64 cc. i\'ve had both. they sell for $ 350 cleaned up on ebay
There is a vortec head dealer on ebay and he says the 906\'s do not have hardened exhaust seats and are the crappier head, and the 062s are the updated upgraded heads.

I had a 75 camaro with a 383 501 lift cam with a set of \"crappy\" 906 heads. the car ran 7.9s in the 1/8th mile and it weighed about 3600 pounds. I sold the car to a guy down the road and he drives almost everyday.

i think what they mean by crappy is that both are good but the 906\'s are\'nt as good as the others?

the 062 head flows 10-15 cfm more than the 906,as far as the comb.ch. size gm has only used 64cc heads since the mid 80s,no 72 or 76 off the floor.

The key is which vehicle they came in. If they came out of a 1500 series, light duty truck or vehicle, they have better heads. If they cam out of a 2500 or 3500 vehicle, heavy duty truck or vehicle, they had thicker valve stems and other mods to handle sustained heavy loading. That\'s the easy way to tell the difference. http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif

I understand were talkin vortecs. I run a set of L31\'s myself. My point was to rudedogg. He said gm has used only 64cc heads since the mid 80\'s. I know thats not true. Just my 2cents.
