I took a 350 out of a 73 1/2 ton pickup this past weekend and it is a 4 bolt main. I have heard that most 4-bolt mains had factory steel cranks, but I don\'t know if that is true or not, how do I tell if it is a steel crank?

Thanks.

Tap it with a hammer. If it goes \"dunk\" its cast

If it goes \"Riiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnngggggggggg\" Its forged.

Thanks. I have also heard something about the part lines on the two halves of the mold if cast or where it was stamped when it was forged but I can\'t remember exactly what it was. Like if the line is bigger then it is forged, can someone clarify this for me.

Fat is forged, thin is cast

also if the numbers are raised up then they have been cast into the crank during the casting process.

If the numbers are stamped into the crank then they were stamped in after the forging process.
