My truck smokes at idle and when you give it throttlle. I put 3 different carbs onit thinking it was flooding. But tonight I was standing behind it when my dad gave it some throttle and it was black smoke so it seems like oil. sucks cuz its a brand new motor. plugs look black and sooty. I put a fresh set in this morning and they are already black. whats the deal????????

you\'re flooding! http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_eek.gif Well, not necessarily flooding, but sounds like it\'s overly rich. Looking at your 1/8 mile time, you could have a serious cam, with shitty vacuum at idle. A common problem is the throttle is open beyond the idle circuit. There\'s a few fixes for that.

......... Or, maybe it IS flooding. What\'s the fuel pressure? Shouldn\'t be a whole lot higher than 6 lbs.

and BTW, if it is running that rich, change your oil, \'cause it probably has more raw gas in it than you\'d like. Not good, especially with a nice new engine.

Black smoke means that it is running rich!

Gray/Blue Smoke means it is burning oil!

Do I adjust the mixture screws first or jets? The carb is a brand new mighty demon

Black smoke means it\'s running rich, it\'s not burning oil.

You tried 3 different carbs? First off double check timing. Second, you will want to play with the mixture adjustment screws...

Turn until it sputters or stalls, back it out 6 half turns (or 3 full turns) on both restart the car, and adjust for highest idle, no sputter, no stumble, no inadvertent \"Pop\" in the exhaust...Then do the other..work back and forth between the jets a few times, until it\'s perfect..then go to the rear and sniff..If you smell fuel...do it again. If you can\'t adjust it out..think jets..

I can turn them all the in and back them out

1\\2 round and it runs best. but I thought they had to be out at least 2 turns

So, you didn\'t say what the cam was, and how much vacuum at idle.... or how much fuel pressure....? And, very important, did you check the float levels?

........ I was hoping someone who knew more than me would check in regarding what I mentioned earlier, that is, if your primaries are open too much at idle, the transfer slots may be uncovered. This may be compounded by the power valve not being correct.

......... If that\'s the problem, the fix for that is to either drill small holes in the primary throttle plates. This allows more air thru, so the throttle plates can be closed more at idle, putting you back in the idle circuit. Or, (much easier) open the stop for the secondaries a little. That\'d give the same result. But, I must say I don\'t have any experience with the \"Mighty\" Demon... I thought they were designed with what I just mentioned.

............. I wouldn\'t mess with the jets just yet, your main problem is at idle. Which brings about another question, have you driven it yet? How does it drive? Smoking then also?

The first thing I would do. Then check transfer slots. If ya have a big cam and tight convertor chances are they are uncovered.

does the carb fog out fuel vapors after you shut it off may blown power valves. 1/2 turn out on mixtures is fine

Skeeter, every motor is differant as far as mixture. I had a motor that ran its best at 1/2 turn out from closed on both screws. I think your just runnin too rich, play with the screws and you should get it. Every motor i tune i get it to where when its idleing you see moisture on the ground...its not fuel...its just a sign that its running its best...kinda hard to explain on here...Every motor i have i get compliments on how well it runs and how smooth it is. Thats one thing i am very particular about, its gotta run smooth. look at some of the new cars for moisture out of there pipes.. some of them have little droplets coming out of there pipes...there running the most efficiant it can. Just play with the screws, you will get it.

I am having some of the same problems, but what I am curious is the water thing. I have TONS of water coming out the tailpipe, i could wash my hands from just a couple seconds behind my pipes. I check the rad and water aint going down, what gives?

Ok don\'t panic it was just the carb out of adjustment. I played the mixture screws and got it to quit. still smokes just a little but I think it is because the plugs are fouled

I had the same thing with my truck and it was the float set to high
