View Full Version : Dumb question about bending gas line.

So, most of the gas line back by the tank on my truck is lookin to be in piss poor shape. I went out today, spent like $50 and bought enough line to replace it all, a tubing bender that is GUARANTEED not to crimp, a cutter, and a double flaring tool. So I get everything cut and flared up nice, but EVERY TIME I try to bend a sharp angle I crimp the F%*$ out of it. I followed the instructions and did what I was supposed to do, but I just cant bend more than a 45 degree angle without crimping it! Any tips for me, or is there a type of bender you guys have used that works well? The one I\'ve got basically looks like a long connecting rod with a hook up near the circle end of it (I\'m sorry, thats the only way I can think to describe it) I just decided that I\'m going to stop by a local garage tomorrow and have some line bent for me, which is gonna cost me a few bucks more, but I need it like YESTERDAY so I can get everything rolling here so whatever. I just want to know for the future in case I have to redo brake lines or whatever down the road.
did you only get a 45 degree bender?

Imperial Eastman makes an excellent tubing bender. It is what i use and never had any problems. They are little more money but you get what you pay for.

go to home depot. in the plumbing section there is a tubing bender. it\'s an aluminium bender that bends 1/4, 5/16, & 3/8 steel, copper, & aluminium tubing. i\'m not to sure of the price, but i believe it\'s about $20. it\'s just a handle with 3 90 degree curves on it, and another handle that pulls the tubing down and around the curves perfectly. it worked for me, and i used stainless steel tubing. hope this helps

What kind of tubing did you get? Myabe its the tubing, not the bender that\'s the problem.
.......... For any bender to work properly, even exhaust pipe, the tubing needs to fit tightly into the bender. If, when you lay the tubing into the bender, it doesn\'t fit snugly, guaranteed to crimp.
......... For all my gas lines I just bought 3/8\" \"brake lines\" from Pep Boys, they come all sizes and lengths, and best of all, both ends flared, and cheap too.

I just warm mine with the small torch and slowly hand form it around increasingly smaller round hammer heads if I dont get in a hurry no problems.Lent my bender and it never came home http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_confused.gif

i got a 90º bender from auto zone like 2 years ago when i was doin my gas lines. it was like 15 bucks. i bought like 3 feet of brake line to practice on before i started in on the gas lines. make sure its a 90º bender and go slow when your bending. heatin it up isnt a bad idea at all.

I knew a guy that would fill his lines with sand to keep them from crmping up, but you have to clean the shit out of them afterwards. His lines always looked great though. I have one of the cheapie benders, and it works okay. My father has an older one that has these changeable wheels that go in it to change the radius of the bend, and that is the nicest bender I have ever used.

Yeah, mine came from autozone too. I guess its me and not the bender, because when I took my sections of line to a local garage to have new ones made this morning, the guy was using the EXACT same thing I had and he made a perfect match to all 3 lines in like 10 mins. I guess I\'ll just have to practice. A few years ago I had to bend a small section of line and my pop helped me and showed me the trick with packing it with sand. That actually works rather well, but you have to pack that freakin TIGHT or it will crimp as well. I was actually going to try that after I screwed up the first line, but I didn\'t have any sand handy at 9pm last night LOL.
