Hey guys,
I got to drive my truck today for the first time since rebuilding the engine. It runs really good and pulls strong in the mid to top end (like I expected). However, with the cam I chose, I\'ve got very little vacuum at idle. I get one good push on the brake pedal before it\'s gone and the pedal gets pretty hard to push. My brother\'s \'97 Sonoma has a little vacuum ball that mounts to the underside of the hood. Anybody know if it would store enough vacuum to be worth doing? If it\'s not big enough, I can always get a vacuum can from Summit, but I thought this might be an easy, clean way to do it.
Thanks,
Jeff
the vac* ball is probably not worth the effort it has very little storage. btw what cam?

What booster will play a big roll in the brakes too. Which booster are you using in the truck your having problems with?
Also, the ball on the 97 I believe is just to hold a little vacuum for the heater controls.

It\'s a Crane Energizer 302. .500/.500 lift, 246/246 @.050.
I knew I\'d run into some vacuum problems, but I wanted a pretty radical cam. It\'s still driveable, but it\'s something that needs addressed eventually. How well do the vacuum cans from Summit or Jegs work out?
Thanks for the opinion on the factory piece. I thought it might be a cool way to do it.

I\'m not sure which booster is in it. It used to be a 2.8 truck, and I\'d guess I\'m using the stock booster. Unfortunately, I bought the truck \"done\" (yeah, right), so there are some details I\'m not sure about. Which boosters are better for performance applications?

Look around in a junk yard. I\'m sure there are big enough ones out there for a couple times on the binders. Or find an old empty freon bottle, they hold around a gallon and weigh very little.

I had the same issue and I bought an after market vacuum tank. The typical brake booster hold 2-3 pumps of the brake. The extra tank gives another 2-3 pumps.

For a 1st gen, there should be stickers on the booster, and the better booster is the \"ST\" booster.

Unfortunately, my booster was painted and I can\'t see what the booster actually is. Maybe down the road I\'ll try to hunt one down. I\'m glad to hear that the aftermarket vacuum tanks work well. I\'ll probably try that first and see how it goes. Thanks guys.
