friday night my buddy had to go to baltimore for the weekend. about 20 miles outside of baltimore his car starts knockin real bad and the oil pressure dropped off. he gets to where he was goin and leaves it sit over the weekend. yesterday he gets in to come home and fires it up and its fine. after about 10 miles of drivin once the motor got warmed up it starts knockin again and the oil pressure is at 15 psi while driving and 3 - 5 at idle. well he stopped drivin and left it in a rest area and got a ride back home.

my guess is he spun a rod bearing....

Gonna need new bearings and maybe a rod depending on how beat up it got. When it is cold the oil is thick and can take up the gap in the bearing. Once it warms up and the oil thins it can\'t make up for the extra clearance in the bearing and it knocks. Don\'t drive it anymore and maybe he got lucky and didn\'t beat the rod journal to hell and be able to just put new bearings in.

I had that problem in my old 1990 camaro. I don\'t know how bad the knock is. But I had a lifter collapse on me. Fine at first when it heated up knock knock knock !! Also if your oil pressure drops then the lifters wont pump up. Maybe the oil pump? I hope it is not a rod baring that will suck.

Most likely the oil preasure drops because of to much clearance in the bearings. If it is a rod knocking you will know. It is loud and unmistakable. Sounds like a midget under your hood with a 5 lb sledge hammer.
