I am installing a set of the hedman shorty headers, and am having a bear of a time getting the steering shaft out, i read that you just need to remove a top and bottom bolt and just pry... i have tried that and it only moves up about a quarter of an inch. i have ran out of ideas and was hoping that someone could inspire me. thanks

try some spray lube or wd-40 on the shaft i had one once that would not slide together it made it very hard to remove normally the slid pretty easy i believe this is a safty device so when the front gets smashed the steering shaft can colaps and not shove the wheel into your chest.
Ive thought about this, and i was thinking what about just cutting a lil peice out of the flange that bolts to the block so u can just slid the header over the shaft without removing the shaft? just an idea.. roy

Don\'t ruin a good set of headers.
Take the bolts out. On mine, it was always easier to get the bottom out first.
Just use some WD-40, and put your ass into it.

where do i spray the wd-40....down by the round rubber piece? or where it goes into the steering box.that bottom bolt that i took out of what looks like a bracket...does that piece come off? or does it slide in to that bottom box witht the shaft

All I do is take out the top bolt up by the firewall, and compress the shaft. I\'ve never had to take the whole thing out to get my headers in/out. Put some elbow grease into compressing the shaft and you should be able to swing the shaft far enough out of the way to get the header on.

Man it\'s been a while since I took mine apart...and it\'s in storage now so I\'m gonna go off of remembering here... there should be a notch/line in the lower shaft that you can put a flat head screwdriver in or something like that. Then beat the screwdriver with a hammer it should move for ya...then you\'ll be all good to go. And yes go nuts with the WD-40! Good luck man!

I had just did this a couple day ago on my truck.
I removed both bolts and then took a small pry bar at the bottom to pry it off the pump and it worked for me.
