it\'s a 7 5/8 28 spline
82-84 were 7.5 26 spline
85-88 were 7 5/8 26 spline
\'89-up were 7 5/8 28 spline
atleast thats how i remember it

Actually to my understanding, there is no size difference. They are all 7.5\" parts.
Gm just designated the 28 spline axle rear ends as 7 5/8\".
So, theres really not a 26 spline 7 5/8\"

Actually there was a little difference Jim. It\'s not enough for people to really know or talk about, but the interior dimensions of the 7 5/8 are actually slightly larger than the 7.5. The exterior of the carrier is the same.
Only reason I bring it up is that I found this out the hard way when I purchased a Powertrax locker unit for my \'84 thinking that the unit labeled 7 5/8 26 spline would fit just fine but turned out it didn\'t. I couldn\'t get the last piece slid in because the inside of my carrier was too small, yet the axle splines matced up fine. A quick call to tech delivered the bad news. That\'s when I just said f*ck it and ditched the whole 10 bolt rear idea http://www.s10v8.com/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif

Anyways, for 95% of people it won\'t matter to distinguish between them, but if you\'re looking to add aftermarket internal pieces like a powertrax or lockrite then you would have to get the right one

Actually I used the ones from my 7.5 rear. However, they were aftermarket bolts that came with my lowering blocks (dont use the blocks anymore). It was a real tight fit over the axle, but i tapped them on with a rubber hammer.
The shock plates I used were my stock ones, the ford shocks mount differently so Ididn\'t use those.
If you can\'t get your stock U-bolts to fit over the axle, you could probably just use the ford U-bolts and drill new holes (wider) in the stock shock plates.

The only difference is the spline count and the interior dimensions of the case. Powertrax is the only company that lists a 26 spline 7.6. From somebody that has sold many hundreds of internal kits, it doesnt exist. Look at any parts site and they will not list a 7.6 26 spline in anything except a lock-rite. Even GM themselves only sells parts for 7.6/28 or 7.5/26. An 84 truck should have used a 7.5 26 spline kit, a 7.6 kit would be too large.
