Question 4l60e trans has no gear engagement

i have a 94 s10 with a 350 vortec and computer from a 97 tahoe 2wd. the trans out of the tahoe was not available so i got a 4l60e out of a 98 s10 2wd. the trans was bench tested b4 i bought it to verify correct operation. i installed the trans and noticed that with the torque converter fully engaged on the trans spline and the trans mounted to the engine i have no clearance between the converter and the flexplate. i mounted it up anyway and started my truck and heard a high pich whining like a supercharger sounds and the trans wouldn't engage in any gear. i have already checked all wiring for defects and found none. i replaced the neutral safety switchand still no luck. please help me with this problem if you can.

Thanks
Matt

that whining you heard was the pump. its either not pumping or the pump went out. i am having the same issue with a 700r4.

Sounds to me like you didnt have the converter all the way seated on the pump . The 2 notches on the converter line up with the gear on the pump and if you didnt get it on them and put it up anyhow the pump mite be junk now .

mine does slip a bit off when i tighten the bolts, when i replaced my trans i started with 8 quarts of fluid and just cranked it to pump some fluid around and it made a nice whine so i stopped cranking and put 4 more quarts in... hasn't made the sound since and its working perfectly... though i have a 4L60

dido .... Alot of us on here rebuild our own trans's and from what you've sed eather the pump is now trashed , low fluid or converter is wrong/junk.

Take a trans line off and start the truck . Tell us if you have fluid pumping out or not .

i did take a line off and saw trans fluid pumping out while running the truck when i first had this problem and 3 days ago. the torque converter is the one that came with the transmission but i have no way to know if it is the original one for that trans. i am considering pulling the trans back out of my truck tomorrow and check everything out but i have to raise my cab up to seperate it so it could take awhile to do it. but if there is anything else you guys can recommend i try to do before i pull it please let me now. this is the 3rd trans i've had installed in this truck and i'm sick of havin to take it out and put it back in. the first one had no reverse, 2nd had bad front pump so if this one is bad i may swap it out for a manual cause i am sick of auto's. This is the only auto i own and it is giving me the most problems out of all 8 vehicles!!!

hook a pressure gauge to the port on the side of the trans and see how much pressure the pump is putting out.

Yeah, what he said. The driver's side has a 1/4" NPT plug. Install a gauge to see the output pressure of the pump.
