Default 6L80E, I know I want one

So far I've learned aside from being stronger and lighter than a 4L80E that it has an Internal computer that needs the same inputs as the the other electronic transmissions but is easy to program. I'm just wondering what T cases will bolt up to it and what I'd need to get it on the back of a Gen 1 block, I'm thinking of getting one instead of a monster 700r4 in the future since they'd be around the same price and the 6L80E has great gearing

Rusty, shed some light on this 6l80e. What is it used in and other advantages?

The 6l80e is made by GM powertrain, not hydramatic. From what I hear it is not easy to program but have not had much experience with it yet. Its is used in all new chevy trucks starting in 07 I believe in the 2500 and 3500 gas trucks. Now it is used in the half tons also but not shure if it's exactly the same as the 6l80, maybe a 6l70 or something, I can check later. In personal experience it makes a great hot rod while driving empty, but as of yet I am not impressed with the towing "feel" of it, seems trucks with the 4l80e feel as if they have more torque, could just be torque management in the pcm though.

By the way I am new here but work at a chevy dealer in western new york.

your better off with the 4L80E. built you cant break it unless your throwing it some very extreme numbers. there are guys using these in AWD typhoones with tt v8s pushing 700-800hp. and now there is no need for a high doller stand alone for it. so no crazy programming and so forth. put it to you like this. if your going to spen 4-6K on an 07 up trans that need a special ecm and experimental programming why would you want to bolt that to a old tech 1st gen block? you would be better of spending 8K for a complete LS6/T56 pull out and custom ecm and have a beast in anything you put it in. well in the event that i'd be getting a 6l80E it would be bolted up to a 1st gen dart block 383 with high compression and as much torq as possible... probobly not a blower but posibly running at most 70% nitro mix when i got to a track, the low first gear would allow me some nice gearing.

also figuring if i was going to use an electronic transmission why get one that i need to add a computer to... if the 6l80E has one inside the case, thus why i was wondering if anyone else knew anythig more about it, all i know is it takes as much power as the allison and sits behind the 6.0 and the diesel's in the newer gm trucks...

if it does need a pcm then i'll get myself the monstertransmissions TH400 or 4l60

It's a good transmission, and as far as I know it's not behind the diesel yet, if it is maybe only the low horse duramax in the g-vans that were getting the 4l80e. All other duramax trucks get the allison, at least for now. There is a rumor gm will be parting ways with allison, and using the 6l80e in everything, but it's only a rumor at this point. I would hate to see the allison go, we NEVER fix these things at the dealer, except for the guys making 600 horse and 1,000 ft/lbs and doing truck pulls. Alright I just looked up this for variations of this trans 6L45/6L50/6L80/6L90 . It comes in alot of torque capacities apparently.

thanks! exactly the type of info i was looking for, does the allison need an external ecm? on the allison site the 6 speed i was looking at seemed to have similar gearing and hp cap of ~650? on the monstertransmissions site their 6l80E was also spec'd around the same, i was just thinking since i'd read on a few forums that the 6L80's pcm was internal and the programming was easyer it would be the better option for me
