ZR2 rear end?
Was shopping at a junk yard for a rear axle with disc brakes & found one from a later model (99+) blazer. One of the guys there recommended a different one that they had there, as we are installing an LS1 (in our '89 short bed 2wd) & should have a bit beefier rear end under it. What they have is a disc brake rear end out of an "00" ZR2 pickup. He said that they had an 8.5" ring gear & were more solid that the standard rear end. Any info out there? Are they limited slip? Any issues? Anything that we should watch for?
3 things are appealing...
1. disc brakes
2. Larger ring gear
3. Suspect it will fit without mods as it is from an S10
Also, when switching to rear discs, co you need to change anything with respect to the proportioning valve or anti-lock rear brake system?
Your input is appreciated!
Lots more research to do.

OK, a bit of research turns up that the track of the ZR2 is 3.9" wider than the standard S10. Don't really want to deal with that.....
That leaves the possibility of a standard S10 rear axle with disc brakes. What experience have you guys had with V8s & standard S10 rear ends? Our truck will be a daily driver, not a race truck.
As always, your input is welcome.
Thanks & have a great weekend!

as a daily driver you will be fine with the stock rearend.
Now if you bolt slicks on it and head to the dragstrip, you better have a buddy with a trailer, just in case.

you get you a newer rearend from a 97 to 2000 2.2 engine truck they are 28 spline axles and 4:10 gears to compensate for the lack of power and most were posi . the 4x4 axles are wider due to the wheel offset .

ZR2 rear end
Trying to follow....
Are the newer rear ends stronger?
We don't really want a wider rear end. Are the newer 2wds still the same width as our '89 2wd?
4:10 gears sound great for the strip, but ours is a daily driver with lots of highway driving. We currently are running a 3:73 limited slip rear end.
Appreciate your input.

They are only stronger if it is an 8.5" ring gear.
Not sure about the width.

Ran the stock rearend under our 83 X-cab with 350/700R4 combo. Many burnouts and still hangin in there. In process of putting disc s on the rear, purchased from The Little Shop of Horrors, in Tenn. He supplies everything needed for the conversion-- rotors, calipers, pads, brackets. flex brake hoses and hardware.

you can find a 8.5 in some 2wd s-10's, but they aren't very common and expensive. Good luck
